Note: This is just something I wrote to pass the time. Obviously I own nothing but this creation. Excuse any out of character moments, I really pumped this out within fifteen minutes!
The pain came late one night, tearing Maggie from the deepest sleep she had in months. It started in her back and radiated to her lower abdomen, she didn't have to read a book to know what was going on; this was labor and she expected it.
What she didn't expect was for the labor to last longer than a day, but twenty four hours later she found herself propped up on the narrow bed ready to give up. The pain was almost constant now and the pressure in her back was unbearable, no amount of squirming or shifting could give her any relief.
Push. They were all telling her to push and even when she was pushing they were screaming at her to continue pushing. Maggie found this annoying and let them know often. "I can't," She was breathless as she looked at Carol, grabbing the older woman's arm with her clammy hand. "I can't keep doing this."
Carol smoothed a few stray strands of hair from her forehead and shook her head. "Don't you dare give up, you've come this far. Dang it, keep going Maggie."
The pain was intense with the next contraction, more intense than before and Maggie shrieked as she instinctively pressed her chin to her chest and gave it all she had in that moment. To her surprise it ended and suddenly she was in Carols arms -the older woman pressing her lips to her temple. "You did it, Maggie. You have a son!"
The cord was cut and within seconds the baby was on her chest, his hoarse cries filling the air. Maggie brought her arms up around him and marveled at how perfectly he fit into them as his cries quieted to soft squeaks. She shifted, bringing the baby to her lips, and placed a kiss against the sticky fuzz that coated the top of his head. "Welcome to the world sweet boy."
