The Hour of Need
A/N: Hello everyone! After reading so many Damon/Elena fictions, I thought I should give it a shot. And here I am. Although it's just a pesky one shot, but it's a start, right? Please let me know what you think of it. I'm up for constructive criticism. And I would love to know what you think of the story. Thank you :)
This is set during 3.22 after Stefan leaves Elena to rescue Matt.
Disclaimer: I don't own The Vampire Diaries.
Dark, suffocating water. She is drowning. The water is claiming her. And this time it will succeed. No one to save her now. Last when she encountered with this place, she escaped the cool grip of silky darkness by trickery. Not this time, though. She can feel it. It's going to take her tonight.
'How much time has left?' She muses faintly. How much before her body stops fighting, and hits the muddy floor of this horrendous lake? Sadly enough, her heart doesn't want to fight anymore.
She hopes it's not long. Not entirely because her weak system can't take this torture any further . It can't. But there's always that fear of being saved, too. She can't be saved now. She has lost too much-way too much to have the desire to breathe. Her heart is too weary to see that pained look in his face.
Yes, she is taking the easy way out. She saw his love, and knows very well what her death will do to him.
She feels her breathing constricting, Elena closes her eyes and tries to have a moment of comfort . But her inhales become painful, broken. She is aware of her upcoming hyperventilation. And she feels a bout of tear coming through her eyes.
Oh, what she would give to just have him by her side now!
And there she goes again, she thinks. How come no one ever told her how selfish she is! Even now, hardly a few minutes ago she rejected him. She feels a self-hatred seeping into her. Well, she doesn't have to live with it now. But she needs to tell him that he deserves the best of the world. That he earned his happiness long ago before the world decided to take it all away from him.
She is faintly amused by the irony that her thoughts are rather clear and more honest than the times when she was safe at home. And it makes her angry that she couldn't do right by him when all he did was for her happiness.
Suddenly a round of cough erupts from her chest. She tries to rub at her throat to lessen the uncomfortable feeling. Elena tugs at her seat-belt, trying to somehow break free from the tight grip. But her energy drops every trying second. Her tears coming with full force now, mingling with the water. She has never felt more hopeless. Elena needs to tell him that she loves him just as much as he loves her. That he is nothing less than everything to her. And she wants to fight for them. But first she needs to fight this .
Her mind and heart are shockingly very awake, trying to find a way to escape death. She tries to keep herself awake. But her body is losing the battle rapidly. Her mind screams in agony. She feels defeated. She let them both down.
….…
The water is no more heavy on her. It's not crashing her from every side. It's lulling her to sleep now. And a small jerk results her body to make one last attempt to fight before she surrenders to a deep slumber.
