Love You Through It
Prompt: I'm Gonna Love You Through It- Martina McBride
She dropped the phone and burst into tears.
The doctor just confirmed her fears.
Her husband held it in and held her tight.
Emily had been going to the doctor for normal check-ups, but one check-up stopped her fast-paced life right then. She had been waiting for test results to come back and it seemed as though it was taking forever.
She sat on the couch with Derek when the phone rang. It was the doctor's office. She already knew was he was going to say before he said it. She had been feeling different ever since the tests were done. The test would be positive. Emily answered the phone and the doctor said, "Mrs. Morgan, I'm so sorry. You have breast cancer. This is curable, but you'll need to go into surgery as soon as possible."
Emily set the appointment and hung up. She dropped the phone and broke down crying.
Derek held her close and said, "I know that you're afraid and I am too. But you'll never be alone, I promise you. When you're weak, I'll be strong. When you let go, I'll hold on. When you need to cry, I swear that I'll be there to dry your eyes. When you feel lost and scared to death, like you can't take one more step, just take my hand, together we can do it. I'm gonna love you through it." Emily smiled at him and said, "I love you, Derek."
She made it through the surgery fine.
They said they caught it just in time,
But they had to take more than they planned.
Now, it's forced smiles and baggy shirts to hide what the cancer took from her.
But she just wants to feel like a woman again.
Emily lay in her hospital bed after the surgery. The doctor had told her they were able to remove all of the cancerous cells, but they took more than they had originally planned. When the doctor left the room, Derek held her hand. She twisted her wedding ring out of habit. "Derek, I'm cured. I'm no longer afraid." Derek smiled at her.
A month after her surgery, she went to see all of her friends. Everyone hugged her and had a good time. Emily forced a smile, but still felt lost, like she wasn't truly there.
As soon as she got home, she broke down crying. Derek held her close and she said, "I don't think I can do this anymore." He took her in his arms and said, "That's what my love is for. I love you, Emily. We'll get through this- together."
