Luna found it hard to believe that anyone could be truly evil. She knew people could be mean. She knew people could be cruel. Luna had learned all of that the hard way. But being actually evil? To not have any trace of humanity, to have completely forsaken all morals and somehow have managed to successfully ignore your conscious? That was just inhuman, impossible.
But sometimes there was just no other explanation for the way things were. No one but a truly evil, horrible, cruel monster could be responsible for the blood staining the Great Hall, the bodies lying limp all over Hogwarts, the families huddled together in corners starting small floods with their tears. It took true evil to massacre so many people, non-magical and magical alike.
So maybe there was another reason why Luna held on to her ideas of good and light. Maybe it was because she knew that accepting that there was true evil in the world would be eliminating all memories of her childhood; make her turn into a stone-faced adult who scoffed at the idea of fun and games. But that wasn't it, it wasn't it at all. Luna wasn't scared of turning into such a person, because it was impossible. The idea was as silly as some people believed nargles were, as silly as some people believed she was. Because Luna Lovegood could never pretend to be someone she wasn't.
The true source of her lingering optimism lay in the tombstone that Luna was staring at now. It belonged to her mother, the kindest and loveliest person Luna knew, would ever know. It had been her mother who had told her that no matter how evil someone may be, there is always good inside of them; her mother had also said that it was up to Luna to find that good.
So as Luna laid a sprig of mistletoe on her mother's grave as she usually did, she walked away with a feeling of peace and happiness. After all, the one person she had believed could ever be evil was now dead, wasn't he? All was right with the world, and there was no reason to doubt her mother any longer; and as long as Luna had a say in the matter, there would never be a reason ever again.

So. I wrote this a few days after the Deathly Hallows pt. 2 came out, and didn't really feel like posting it. I'm still not too sure about it, so reviews are welcome! Pile on the constructive criticism! Woo!
Anyway. Thanks for reading!
Sincerely,
ItsOnMars :)
