He'd always been there for her. Whatever she needed, he would give it to her. He would do anything for her.
At the beginning of their English class, the teacher had given them blank paper. Dawn wasn't sure what it was for, but the teacher was just talking, and she was bored, so she began to fold the paper.
First she made a square, then folded it in half, in half again, on the diagonals, and into a diamond. She folded the paper diamond into a kite, then flipped up the sides to form a longer diamond. She folded up the loose ends and bent one side of the paper crane to make a head and tail.
Just as she had finished, the teacher announced the purpose of the paper, 'Now, I want you to write on your paper several key quotes from your prescribed texts. Make sure you have quotes for each theme and character.'
Dawn paused for a moment, wondering how she could fit quotes on the tiny, folded paper crane.
'Dawn, that doesn't mean making origami', the teacher said sternly, as he noticed the paper crane she was holding.
Sitting next to her was B, who pushed over his piece of paper for her to use.
'Oh, no thanks, I'm fine', Dawn replied politely.
But B pushed over his paper again, motioning for her to take it. He tapped his workbook, he already had somewhere to write.
'Thank-you', she smiled, he was so sweet.
At the end of the lesson, Dawn gave him the paper crane she had made in class.
That afternoon, Dawn had to wait half an hour to be picked up from school. B waited with her the whole time, folding paper into different shapes. He taught her how to make an origami box, a boat, a flower and a butterfly.
His large jacket enveloped her tiny figure. He had insisted that she wear it, with the cold winter weather. She told him about her plans to save endangered animals, stop animal cruelty, raise awareness of global warming, and plant new trees around the school.
He always listened to her. Everybody else got annoyed when she told them about her ideas, but he listened. Even if he never spoke a word, she could tell he respected and valued her.
No one could understand their relationship, the way they could speak with their eyes, and know what the other one was thinking.
They weren't normal. They didn't follow the crowd, they didn't care what others thought. They would always do things differently.
But they were just friends, and would always be just friends.
It was nothing more than friendship,
It was nothing more than friendship.
Always, always, always.
