Brick's POV

To Jo, everything was a game.

Her life was a game, and it was her game. She decided the rules, not me.

Everyone else was just other players in her game. Opponents, competitors, rivals, enemies. We were just obstacles in the way of her victory.

In Jo's game, alliances don't exist. Love was a weakness. Jo was a winner, and winners don't need help.

Maybe that's why she thought I was a loser. 'Never leave a man behind', would seem like such a joke to her. She doesn't believe in trust and loyalty. In Jo's game, loyalty leads to failure.

That's why I could never tell her how I really felt about her. She would use it, use me to her advantage.

Sometimes I forget about her game. Sometimes I forget she doesn't care about me.

There was that time she pulled me out of a ditch. Our hands intwined, and for a fraction of a second, I thought I might actually mean something to her.

But that was just my imagination.

Because in Jo's game, love doesn't exist. Right?

(Wrong?)
