Sesshomaru Is…
Rin gazed in mute awe at the strange, silver-haired daiyokai she'd met just yesterday and now trailed after into today. Lord Sesshomaru didn't speak much, but in Rin's little world of silence that was perfectly fine. Like she did, he communicated by other means; actions chorused his character plainly.
The small child watched Sesshomaru's nose wrinkle slightly as he studied the air currents; then he led them downstream deeper into the woods. Rin's puzzlement lasted only a few minutes until blasts gunpowder and the shouts of warring humans echoed from behind. Quickening her hurried trot, she kept close.
Lord Sesshomaru is wise.
It was later in the morning when she drew her next conclusion. Jaken said something about blades and inheritance that Sesshomaru found most displeasing. Presently, the imp was kicked under heel.
Lord Sesshomaru is in charge.
A protesting grumble from Jaken was heard…right before Sesshomaru turned about-face and retraced his exact steps.
Always.
The sun was high when, with a casual flick of the wrist and a resonating crunch, the spine of an offending demon snapped.
Lord Sesshomaru is courageous and strong.
Later, as afternoon waned into evening and Rin was sure that having tarried at the back of the group for so long she was all but forgotten, two glowing yellow eyes fixed on her. Even little girl ghost steps would not escape his perked ears.
Lord Sesshomaru is perceptive.
With a stern command to stay put, Rin waited until past the time Jaken was asleep for the taciturn daiyokai to come back. When his now familiar shape parted from the foliage, he dropped something in her lap. Rin gaped at the gift as all words fled her.
Lord Sesshomaru is…
The Western Lord's eyes widened when he saw that those of the newest addition glistened with gratitude. They were just clothes! Did she think this was brought on by kindness? With measured scorn he eyed the girl's peasant clothes, from the ragged edges to the tattered collar. Finally, his gaze returned to hers.
"Practical," Sesshomaru corrected.

A/N: To help out a well-intentioned reviewer, I know Sesshomaru's garments for Rin are definitely those of nobility -- no commoner goes around in such bright, expensive colors. True, they are not practical for day-to-day activities of a busy child, but -- as the reviewer pointed out -- they are a reflection of Sesshomaru's status and thus very "practical." After all, again as the reviewer observed, it would look badly for Sesshomaru to travel around with a peasant girl. Finally, he's not necessarily being cold, pragmatism just so happens to be the cover-up with which we know our favorite demon lord feels most comfortable. :)
