Title: My Game of Life
Set between Chapters 11 and 13 of my other story, "Mercutio and Allegra". This would have been a better Chapter 12, but noooo, I had to have a random little fit of writer's block. Or whatever that nonsense was.
Anyway, pleas enjoy and by no means hesitate to review,
Cornadopia
P.S. I guess I forgot to dedicate this to a person who knows who he is. Even if you never meet me or speak to me, I'll be all right just thinking of what it would be like if you did.
The crisp silk of the covers had been warm when they had first come to bed. Now, as Allegra lay awake in the dark, she thought she would freeze.
Things had happened so quickly the day before; up until then, Allegra's life had been so, so slow. She didn't understand where the tears came from, but as the moments in the bed that night crept by, she gripped the silk covers with all her heart. Any kind of release would be good for her tonight.
Next to her, his breathing was as natural as wind. She grinned and turned over, looking upon her wonderful savior and hero in tender fondness. That wonderful, wonderful man had given her so much, in so little time, and she wasn't even sure he knew it.
Oh, but that was what she loved about him, her Mercutio… he was so innocent, so simple. He was her game of life.
She sighed to herself, studying her noble lover in the dark. So, so much had happened the day before, and she could hardly believe it. Never had she imagined herself so happy. She had never believed she could be so happy. Her life up until then had been such a daze, such a fog. Every day was the same. She saw no sunshine and heard no thunder; all was fog, her entire life. She had been born in the fog.
Mercutio made a sighing noise in his normally silent sleep. Allegra closed her eyes for a moment, wrapping herself inside of the sound of his voice and savoring the presence of her heroic love as though she'd never again feel it. Finally, she could feel again. Feel anything. All had been so numb. Finally, she was out of that daze. She was finally alive, and as long as she breathed her air and sensed her noble Mercutio, life was better than she had thought it would be.
He did not hear her weep now. She did not mind. For the first time ever, she did not feel the need to try and be brave. Kissing Mercutio on the cheek and making him smile in his sleep, Allegra wrapped her arms around him. He embraced her as well, murmuring in pleasure. She had thought he was still asleep. Oddly, she was still unsurprised when he rubbed a tear off of her face, silencing her rapid breathing.
"Thou needest not weep, pretty one. Ne'er again."
