A/N: Just finished watching Kimi no Todoke (LITERALLY, like, just now) It took 4 months for my friends to convince me to watch it. Man, I feel so...so...unsatisfied with the 'ending'? (Is that even supposed to be an ending?) Gah! I'm going to read the manga! This short short fic came to mind while watching. I've only watched the anime so if there are inconsistencies with the manga, blame my brain.
A Tad Too Late
...
"You know, whenever a girl confesses to a guy still in highschool, it doesn't matter if he likes the girl or not,
his mind will be filled with thoughts about her for the entire day"
...
Soft brown eyes hidden behind dark glasses widened a bit as Pin's words resounded in her head. A faint blush coloring her cheeks as an image of Kazehaya flashed in her mind.
I wonder...if that's true, she mused to herself, a smile unconsciously forming on her lips, before she caught herself. Not that it really matters, she thought, its just that...
That would be nice.
Kurumizawa Ume.
That was her name, although she insist on everyone calling her Kurumi. She was popular back then when they were in middle school, she still is now by the way, but how to explain it...something was off about her. He can't pinpoint what it is, maybe it was her smile or her laugh...
She was perfect, always nice to everyone, polite, smart...cute. They were good friends, but not really that close. Some of his friends were her fans, and some of hers were his. That was their connection.
Kurumi always looks like she's far away...detached even if she's standing right there. Sometimes she would smile and when she thought no one was looking, her eyes would cloud over. Kazehaya wondered why her friends never noticed it.
That day, when he saw her crying alone in the classroom, it felt like he was seeing a glimpse of the real Kurumi for the first time. It made him happy, like he was privy about something with her.
She had cried with all her heart then, thanked him after, then acted like nothing happened the next day.
Why can't she smile like that too? Smile from the bottom of her heart, like...like S-Sawa—Kuronuma-san, his heart beating faster just by the thoughts of her. An image of her standing in the soccer field during their class practice flashed through his mind.
("I like your braids")
A fond smile appeared on his face.
If Kurumi had smiled back then, instead of hiding her face from him after crying. If only she had acted like her real self—spunky, like she did when she confessed to him yesterday—instead of keeping up with all the lies. He knew he would've have liked her. A lot.
"Are you even the least bit happy that I told you I like you?"
Yes, it made him happy, so much.
There was a reason why he liked braids.
It reminds him of his almost-first love.
A/N: I sort of started to like Kurumi after she changed her ways. This bossy chara suit her much better than the cutesy one, and I keep thinking she'd pair up great with Ryuu, weird huh? (Yeah, I know) Tell me what you think? or help me come up with a decent title. R&R please.
