What's Lost to You
On the two-month anniversary of Diana leaving Dan, she wakes up and realizes that she can't remember the color of Gabe's eyes. They were green, weren't they? No, maybe they were hazel…she goes through every eye color she's ever seen, but she can't just match one to her son.
Frantically, she searches for pictures of him to get her answer, but she can't find any. Then she remembers that she had thrown them all away after she decided to leave her old life behind and start again. What color were his eyes? Why can't I remember what color his eyes were? The thought won't leave her mind all day, distracting her from everything she tries to do and consuming her every thought until she yells out loud, "I GIVE UP!" She does something she hasn't done since she left: she calls Dan and Natalie.
Unfortunately for her, Natalie answers. "Hello?" she says in a cold way that makes Diana know that she's read the caller ID.
"Hi, Natalie," she says. "It's me—your mother."
"What do you want?"
Diana would have never felt guilty about this in the past, but being away from Natalie for two months has made her see the world differently. Still, she asks the question. "I was just wondering…what color were Gabe's eyes?"
Natalie looks down at the floor, bites her lip, and considers not saying anything. Eventually, she tells Diana, "My eyes are brown."
Diana doesn't know what to say to that.
