"Hey, Mom," Eric asked idly, "does it matter if my valentine's a little bit older than me?"

Amy stopped washing dishes and turned immediately to her son, who was sitting at the kitchen table. His feet dangled down from his chair as he drew a heart on cardboard paper. "Of course not, sweetheart," Amy said, reaching for a towel. This was the first time she'd known of her son to display interest in a girl. Her little boy was growing up! Smiling down at him, she asked, "Who's the lucky one?"

"I am," he said, without a second's thought, and her smile grew.

He put down his marker and reached for scissors. He glanced up at her over the big, red heart. "But are you sure it's okay?"

"What's okay, sweetie?"

"The age thing," he said, squirming in his seat as he carefully cut out the heart.

"Yes, Eric, I'm sure it's okay," Amy assured him, wondering what grade his crush was in. She couldn't possibly be more than a couple of years older than him. "Age doesn't matter when it comes to love. It's just a number."

"Cool!" Eric grinned up at her. "Thanks, Mom!"

She watched him for a moment longer as he continued working on his valentine. He glued the heart to another paper. Surprise filled her as she saw him scrawl Mister Feeny across the top of the second paper, but then she smiled. "It's sweet you're making a valentine for your teacher."

"Yup," he replied distractedly.

"When are you going to make one for your sweetheart?"

"Oh, I'll get it done." He stopped, looked thoughtful for a moment, and then started gathering his craft supplies. "Cory'll be back soon. I think I'll finish this upstairs."

"Okay," Amy said, although she was brimming with curiosity. "But, Eric, tell me one thing, son. Do I know her?"

"Her?"

"The girl at school who you like."

"Oh. Nah. You don't." She watched him as he scampered away, wondering who the lucky girl was and smiling over her son's sweetness. Her little boy might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he was definitely a sweetheart. She'd hear about his good heart and sweetness again from George when he received his valentine. She was glad her son was carrying on her tradition of giving valentines to teachers as she had always done for hers; she only wished his grades could be as good as hers. She went back to washing her dishes, never once thinking that that valentine for Mister Feeny was the only one Eric planned on making that year.

Eric grinned to himself as he worked on his secret love's valentine. The years between them didn't matter, but he did have to wait until Mister Feeny realized his love for him was real. Then they could be together and show the world how beautiful their love was. He hummed, his eyes dancing merrily, as he worked and dreamed of the times to come when he and his crush were an item.
