I'm usually hiding in the CSI corner of FF but this idea just popped into my head and I thought it'd give it a go :)

Broken Stars
The snow fell in slow motion continuing its endeavour to cover every surface of Chicago available as an icy wind swept through the streets. The smell of winter and the sound of cars filled the air but John could feel nothing but an odd sense of heat beneath his skin. Dennis's blood was still on his clothes, the images of his body were still on his mind. He could feel the bile slowly creeping up his throat as he attempted to let go of all of the emotions that had overwhelmed him.
"Here." A soft voice brought him back to the harsh reality that this was not going to be one of those things that he could think away. Maggie held a polystyrene cup in her out stretched hand as she took a seat on the bench beside him. He took the coffee not knowing what else to do even though he knew that he wouldn't be able to handle the taste.
"It's not your fault." Maggie offered- her awkwardness evident as she attempted to un-puzzle the appropriate words; John nodded in appreciation at her attempts to make him feel better. They hardly knew each other but the fact that she had was there comforted him.
"What sort of a friend was I that I didn't even notice how he'd been feeling?" He asked his eyes on the inky black sky.
"You...you were a friend who was doing their best to stay above water...this job... it has you blind..." She attempted to explain his actions.
"He tried talking to me about it you know..." John turned to face her, meeting her sympathetic eyes. "... about the problems he'd been having... with his girl friend... with work... but I brushed him off at every opportunity I had because I didn't want to be brought down... How selfish is that?"
"It's hard listening to other people's problems all the time...the things we see every day...all we want to do is switch off..." She muttered to him, moving even closer her hands visibly shaking from the cold as she gripped hold of her own untouched coffee cup even tighter.
"I just feel so guilty." John whispered as he turned fully to face her.
"I know..." Maggie whispered back; she reached out taking his hand in her own, their eyes meeting again, their gaze lingering alongside the freezing frosty air between them. He took a deep breath and gave her a weak smile.
John held on to her hand, his finger tips taking in the traces of warmth beneath her skin- evidence of life.
Things were going to be alright.
The End
