iChick Hunter.
"My poor baby," said Sam, fighting the tears that were threatening to fall from her eyes. She was crouching underneath a kitchen sink while her best friend furiously fiddled with a wrench. Carly had heard one of the five missing chicks in the sink, leading to the two girls attempting to take apart the drain system. Carly had taken the wrench from her brother and set to work immediately; working the tool like it wasn't the first time she had ever held one. Sam considered her brunette friend to be somewhat appealing while she attacked the metal pipes with the red tool.
"Baby?" asked Carly, halting her work for a few seconds to give Sam a questioning glance.
"You said that we were Mommies now," replied Sam in a quiet and emotional voice. This was odd for the usually brash and outgoing girl. In fact, hearing any sort of outwardly caring from the blonde girl was rarer than the planets aligning; this was not lost on Carly.
All attempts to rescue the newly hatched animal were halted; instead, Carly had dropped the wrench and grabbed a fistful of Sam's long blonde hair.
"Carly, what are you doing? This isn't time for you to decide that I need to be punished for some insult Freddie deserved. Our babies are in trouble, Carly!" yelled Sam, moving closer to Carly and invading the other girl's personal space even further than they always seemed to be. As Sam's last sentence registered in Carly's brain, all thoughts of forcing the reason behind the sudden change of heart were banished from the brunette's mind.
"Our babies?" Carly's parrot-like question brought up thought and ideas that both girls had experienced before. It created images of screaming in pain, possibly dying and holding the tiny treasure that would make all pain and suffering worth it. The question also brought thoughts of two-storey houses with white picket fences and children's bikes out the front. Neither one of these was new to Sam or Carly, but the person they would be sharing it all with was.
"Yeah, our babies," clarified Sam, detached wonder evident in her voice. They fell into silence, baby chickens the last thing on their minds. Carly was the one to break the silence, with yet another question.
"Hey, Sam?"
Instead of a verbal response, Sam tilted her head up to face her best friend.
"Do you, maybe, want to go out sometime?" Carly asked, trying to sound as innocent and calm as possible. Sam's eyes widened.
"Yeah, sure. Love to," Sam answered while going bright red. Carly's cheeks flushed as the two hugged, pulling each other as close as humanly possible.
While pulling back, Carly hit her head on one of the pipes, causing them both to get back to saving their baby chickens.
