Seventh year, Lily Evans was at a New Year's Eve party at Potter Manor where all the sixth and seventh year Gryffindors were invited along with a few Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs. Not a captivating opening sentence. How can you make it stronger? Loud music was playing in the backyard as they partied and awaited for the clock to strike twelve. Lily looked longingly at James Potter, chatting animatedly with his three best friends.

It was funny how she went from loathing the whole gang to being their close friend in a span of just over a year. James had fancied her in fourth and fifth year, but she found him repulsive. She was also attracted to him, but she was a logical girl and her attraction was suppressed by disgust at his arrogant, bullying, toerag behavior.

In sixth year, however, James stopped doing stupid things to get her attention. She supposed the humiliation at her rejection after their OWLS had its effect on him. The Potter heir was also gradually less arrogant and showy in the way he carried himself and the way he spoke. He no longer hexed people for fun or showed off with his stupid snitch. He only messed with his hair when he was nervous or abashed and Lily had come to find it adorable.

Lily befriended the more tolerable James and in seventh year, they had become Headboy and Headgirl. However, the redhead had now fallen for the idiot in glasses. Problem was that she could not tell if he still harbored the same feelings for her.

At the stroke of midnight, there was to be a New Year's kiss where everyone kissed someone. A part of Lily wanted to walk right up to James and snog him at the stroke of midnight but she feared his rejection. She never told James how she felt out of this fear. Lily was extremely annoyed when she overheard Dorcas Meadow's plan to jump snog James Potter when the clock struck twelve. She was green with jealousy when she saw Dorcas walking up to James and engaging him in conversation, or rather flirting shamelessly with him.

Soon, the countdown towards New Year had begun.

Lily could not let Dorcas snog James. She was now determined to do it herself. She had nothing to fear. If James didn't feel the same way, she could just dismiss it as a New Year's kiss. It was the perfect opportunity to test the waters without being explicit. She knew James would never make the first move even if he did still harbor feelings for her. This was the only way.

Lily ran towards James and Dorcas.

As the clock struck midnight and they heralded 1978, Lily had managed to beat Dorcas into dragging James and pressing her lips on him. She pulled away from him after a few second to see his stunned face.

"I … I'm … very confused," James said. "Was this just a New Year's kiss or …"

"I fancy you, James Potter."

"Since when?"

"Does it really matter? What matters is if you still feel the same way about me," she asked part warily and part eagerly. "But it's alright if you don't. We can just stay friends," she added quickly.

"Don't be silly. Of course I still feel the same way. But I was afraid of taking advantage of our friendship," the messy, black haired wizard said, cupping Lily's cheek.

"Happy New Year," Lily said, alight with happiness.

"Happy New Year," James said, pulling her closer into a second kiss.
