Summary: Inspired by writing prompt "Today I Will Fly" a conversation between two Guthrie sisters before their powers manifest.
"Today Ah will fly." Paige Guthrie stated proudly and judging from her tone there was no doubt in her mind about it. "Is that next on the list?" The question came from her little sister Melody, who had discovered said list. It was a list of all the mutant super powers the young Kentuckian could come up with, with a series of them crossed off, failed experiments.
But the girl was as determined as any 13 year old could be about anything. And because Melody threatened to tell, she now tagged along with her big sister, documenting all the ways it turned out she wasn't a mutant. The pair sat on the dock at the small lake, kicking their feet in the cool water. "Sure is!" "How are ya gonna do it Paige?" She really didn't know.
Jumping off something was the logical step but she had to pick something that was high enough for her powers to kick in and low enough that if she failed she wouldn't get hurt. A trip to the hospital would ruin all her plans. "Well, Ah suppose there're a bunch o'ways t'go about it. Ah think if Ah think flyin' thoughts maybe…" "Flyin' thoughts? What're those?" "You know, like a bird or…or an airplane."
Melody snorted. "An airplane? How can you think like an airplane? If you think like a bird won't you just turn into a bird? Ah know! Maybe you can be a mutant chicken!" Her sister let off a raucous peal of laughter. Paige gave her sister a shove along with an annoyed glance. Sometimes the girl didn't understand just how serious a pursuit this was. If she could just figure out what her power was, she could be an X-man, just like Sam.
She could save the world and make a difference! She knew it. "Shut up! Ah'm gonna do it. Ah know Ah can." "How come you wanna be a mutant so bad?" They had never discussed it before but it had been on the young girl's mind for some time. "Because. Ah just know I am. Ah know it more than Ah've ever known somethin' before. Ah know it to mah bones. And one day mah powers'll come an' Ah'll get outta here." "An' leave us." Melody said quietly.
Paige felt stupid. It wasn't all that long ago that their daddy died or that their big brother left. She still felt the hole that both occurrences had left in her life. She just didn't assume the same would be said of her. "Yes and no." Sometimes her sister was too young to understand that there was no future here. Sam knew it, figured it out a while ago. Even still he would have stayed but just as certainly as Paige knew she was a mutant she knew if she stayed here, she'd just end up some poor farmer's wife and she was meant for bigger things.
"Ah can do more good out there as a mutant than Ah can here." "Maybe Ah'm a mutant too." Melody said after some time. Paige smiled at her sister and grabbed her hand. "Maybe. Sky's the limit. Now, c'mon let's see if Ah can fly."
