When You Come Back to Me Again
How long had it been now? Two years? Two years since the renowned State Alchemist Edward Elric had disappeared. Two years since Al had come back to them, whole again but missing 4 years worth of memories.
Winry Rockbell released a rueful sigh, pushing herself away from her work table where yet another piece of auto-mail lay unfinished. Every day he wandered into her thoughts, and every time it prevented her from finishing her work. She stretched her arms above her head, her joints popping. "Time for another walk," she muttered, flicking her wheat-blonde pony tail over her shoulder.
"Granny, I'm going out!" she called as she pulled on a sweater and slid her feet into her shoes.
A grunt from Pinako was the only reply, the older woman already accustomed to her granddaughter's outings.
The brisk, autumn air washed over the blonde's face, stimulating her senses. She inhaled deeply, surveying the beautiful landscape. The leaves had changed to bright hues of crimson, gold, and orange, dotting the landscape with color. Stalks of yellowed grass waved about her knees as she wandered through the fields, seeming to shimmer and change in the breeze. The same breeze tugged at her hair, whipping it about her face. Azure eyes drunk it all in and longing stirred within her breast. If only he was here, to share this with her. She longed to have him by her side, to finally tell him what her heart needed her to say, and, perchance, hear what she needed to hear. She regretted never telling him how she felt, and it now seemed like she'd never get the opportunity.
"Edward," she whispered quietly. "I wish you were here."
A single, crystalline tear made its way down her face, lingering on her cheek.
"Come on Winry. Don't cry."
Her breath caught in her throat, her body going stock still. A gloved hand gently wiped away the tear, another resting on her shoulder.
"E-Edward?" she stammered quietly.
"Hush," he whispered. "I'll be with you soon. I promise." A pair of lips found her neck, leaving a mark.
"When you come back to me again?" she asked.
"When I come back to you again."
...
Winry sat up with a jolt, breathing ragged. "Just…just a dream…" she breathed, a hand going to the place where he had kissed her. She could still feel his body heat on her back, his hand on her cheek. She could still feel his lips… She shook her head dismissively. "It was just a dream. Just a…dream." But it had felt real. So very real.
She rolled out of bed, stumbling into the bathroom. She flicked on the small light bulb and glanced at herself in the mirror. There, where her neck met her shoulder, was a small love bite; right where he kissed her. Her azure orbs widened as she slapped a hand over the spot. "It was just a dream, right?" she asked her refection. She shook her head, a confused smile gracing her features. "When you come back to me again... I'll be waiting, Edward."
