Two sets of perfectly matching blue eyes stared at each other for what seemed like hours before the question was raised.
"I mean, I don't know what to do, Master Katara!I mean,I really like Mako, might even love him, but he has a girlfriend and I have a world to save! Is it selfish of me to tie him down when I am away all the time? That is, if he even ever does break up with Asami! Why can't everything be simple, like Aang and your relationship. I mean, you had like, no problems!"
A smile appeared on a weathered face. And a chuckle escaped her lips. Korra cocked her head to the side, and knitted her eyebrows in confusion.
"Korra, let me tell you a story." And the tale begun.
" Once, there was a young waterbender named Katara, and she was engaaged to be married to Aang, the avatar, after the adventures made and the 100-year war won."
Korra interrupted:" Yeah, yeah, I know this already, what does this have to do_"
"Hush, child, I'm speaking!"
" He was the happiest fiancee in the history of happy fiancees, and trust me, at that time, there were a LOT. His grey eyes twinkled with light every time he saw her, and was always smiling. Except, through her bright exterior, and cheerful dispostion, every time she went to bed at night, all she saw was gold eyes."
You could see the wheels turning in young Korra's head, and when she figured it out, her eyes widened like saucers.
"Their wedding was huge and lavish. It was pompous and full of bright, happy colors. After their honeymoon, they went to the Earth Kingdom to visit their friend Toph, who was running a succesful bending school for disabled. Little did they know, the newly-wed, newly-crowned Fire Lord was also coming to visit with his wife, Mai. Toph noticed first. The glances, so small that if you did detect it, you'd probably think it had no meaning. But if Aang did notice, which is highly unlikely, he was too lovesick to care. Even Mai was getting slightly excited, thinking about their trips and romantic getaways they would have since they were married, talking with Aang of course, and Toph occassionally muttering a agreement and frequently rolling her eyes at the two. It was normal Toph behavior, they reasoned, and thought nothing of it. Toph made it quite clear that she wasn't happy to the both of them,Zuko and Katara, and told them exactly why. They told her they didn't know what she was talking about, but the sadness in their eyes was impossible to miss. That was their existence. Always secretly longing for something that could never be. Because it was their duty. It was their took their secrets to their graves, and the secret beach trips and summer flings long forgotten in the wisps of time, their laughter and yells of pure joy carried with the wind, eternal."
"So...why didn't you marry him? You loved him, didn't you? Why didn't you chase after him, let him know how much you loved him? You, you could've done SOMETHING!"
"Darling, my destiny wasn't to fall in love. It was to save the world, and the protector of it. And that is exactly what I did."
