Severus Snape was psyching himself up for today. Harry Potter had just begun his tenure at Hogwarts and today would be the child's first potions lesson. To say he was dreading it would be an understatement.

With a deep breath, Severus made his way to greet the new first-year Slytherins and Gryffindors and had to stop himself from staring.

There sat the boy who lived at the school desk he shared with Lily for all of five years.

How dare he! How dare the Potter brat mock me.

As these thoughts past through his brain, the more logical part tried to reason with him that the child could never have known that.

Perhaps a test.

Perhaps the boy was more like his mother than he originally thought. It didn't mean that he would like the brat, but maybe, just maybe he would not hate him as much.

The boy proved him wrong though and Severus couldn't help the slight disappointment that crept into his soul.

The class had ended, and Severus found himself walking up to the desk, tracing his fingers along the desk that held so many memories for him.

Severus sighed as his fingers came across a promise of a lifetime.

It was Lily's idea she wanted to leave her mark at Hogwarts and what better place than their favorite? If one looked, they would find an identical indentation at the very first desk in Flitwick's class.

It was of a wand and a potions bottle crossed and directly under both of their initials.

With a sigh, Severus Snape shook off the disappointment. He might hate the boy but he was still Lily's son and he would not break any more promises to Lily. He would protect the damn brat with every breath in his body.
