Lucy had finally let go of her mother's leg and settled in the sandbox. She was never confident on her own, but her mom had said she'd be "just over there" while she pointed at some benches not far away. Lucy was alone in the sandbox now, so she just sat, and did nothing really. She kept glancing nervously towards the benches to check that her mom was still there.

"What're you looking at there?"

Lucy's head snapped back at the sound, and her eyes stopped at the sight of a dark-haired girl her age, stepping into the sandbox. She didn't know what to say, so she just stared at her. The girl was wearing shiny red shoes, and her dress and headband matched it.

"Is that your mom over there?" The girl continued.

Quinn nodded slightly, still not speaking.

"I'm Rachel Barbra Berry," the girl said brightly, sounding like she'd said it so many times before.

"Lucy Qui-" She paused "Just Lucy"

"Hello just Lucy, pleased to meet you!" Rachel smiled brightly and took Lucy's hand and shook it, like an adult.

Lucy was baffled with this girl's behavior. She knew there was no one like her in the entire world, and she'd only just met her. Rachel was still smiling, but let go of her hand.

"My dads are just over there" Rachel said and pointed at a bench besides where Lucy's mom was sitting.

"Dads?" She thought aloud.

"Yes, I do not have a mother, or well, I do have one, I just don't know her. Instead I have two dads." Rachel explained, talking faster than Lucy could think.

She might have been staring at Rachel again because she started laughing a little.

"You're funny. I get that you didn't know that two boys could like each other?"

Lucy nodded again.

"Girls can like each other too you know." Rachel said.

"They can?" Lucy asked.

"Mmmhmm," Rachel hummed "It's just not as common as with boys and girls."

Lucy looked back at her mom; she was still there. She could feel Rachel looking at her and her cheeks flushed warm.

"You're funny," Rachel said giggling and sitting down right next to her, legs crossed "your cheeks are all red"

That caused Lucy to blush even more out of pure embarrassment. She looked down and focused on Rachel's shiny shoes.

"Your shoes are very pretty" She said shyly.

"Thank you! I got them just yesterday because I won a dancing competition." Rachel beamed with pride as she said it.

Rachel looked over Lucy's shoulder and nodded. Lucy was just about to turn around, but Rachel took her hand.

"I have to go home now. It was amazing to meet you just Lucy." She said as she got up on her feet. She was just about to go, when Lucy tugged at her hand.

"You can call me Quinn. Bye Rachel Berry."

Rachel smiled.

"We'll meet again Quinn, goodbye."

And so Lucy Quinn Fabray watched as she skipped away, heels clicking on the cement.

When her mom called her over the first thing Lucy asked her was if she could get some shiny red shoes.
