Okay, this sort of takes place when Zidane and Freya jump ahead to spy on Beatrix, Kuja, Brahne, etc. and Quina nor Vivi can jump up. I didn't think Vivi's story was very well explained, so I just went ahead and typed this (some things still aren't explained in the game anyways).
I do NOT own Final Fantasy IX, Vivi, The Black Mages, Zidane, Freya, Quina, Burmecia, or anything else! So don't sue me. Okay?
Zidane and Freya had already jumped their way up the castle walls of Bermecia, leaving Quina and Vivi to find their own way up. Vivi was too small to jump, and stumbled on the foot of the Dragoon statue. Quina, of course, in all of the Qu's weight, couldn't jump at all. So, they had to take the long way up to the top of the castle.
"It's no use..." Vivi said, casting all sorts of spells on the door. "I can't do anything right...is it because I may have been a failure? Those dolls... did they really look like me?"
Quina did not hear him talking to himself, for s/he was searching the castle for a way in.
"I no find way here! You, Vivi?" Quina said, picking up a bug from the ground and stuffing it in her mouth.
"Yuck! This nasty yummie. I no can eat--No good!" Quina complained, spitting the defenseless bug out of it's mouth.
"No, I haven't found a way in either..." said the discouraged little Black Mage. He leaned against the door, thinking of a way to get in. Suddenly, Vivi stumbled backwards. The door flew backwards, and Vivi was left on his back.
"You did it!" Quina said, shifting his/her weight from one leg to the other. The two walked cautiously into the castle.
Vivi looked at the scenery. He saw one of the Black Mage dolls lying on the ground, and he went over and looked at it. He began to cry, although he didn't know why.
"Is there some connection I have with it?... And why do they look so much like me?" Vivi wondered, lowering his head. He had many questions... and of course, no one had answers. The whole reason that Vivi came along is because of this mystery. The dolls that have gone kill-happy. The pointy hats that reside upon their head.. Their dark faces, that no one seems to see. The bright, yellow eyes..Just like Vivi's.
Quina walked over to Vivi after searching the room of food.
"What wrong, Vivi?"
"Quina... tell me... does this.. doll.. look like me?"
"Y...n..." Quina started. The worried creature did not know what to say. The doll looked very much like Vivi, but s/he did not want to hurt the sorrowful magician's feelings.
Vivi lowered his head.
"It does, doesn't it? This looks just like me..but bigger," he started, looking at the lifeless, robotic corpse.
"I think they look like you, but you have feelings! They no have feelings. They do what authority tell them do! You do you own will. You got personality, and Vivi special!" Quina said, putting it's chubby glove-covered hand on Vivi's back.
"I suppose you're right.."
"Look! There stair case! Maybe yummie-yummies up there!" Quina said, rushing up the stair case. Quina's tongue, which always hangs out of it's mouth, was drooling and watering with delight. The thought of cakes, Alexandrian foods, and frogs excited her/him.
"Actually," Vivi whispered sharply, "we're looking for Zidane and Freya.. they might be in trouble." Vivi got up, and headed up the stairs after the hungry Qu. As he walked up the stairs, he looked back to see the life-size doll. Vivi knew they looked like him... Many things flashed through his mind. Theories, rather. Was he one of them? And if he was, was he a failure? Maybe, just maybe, the ahead staircase might have answers to his questions. He had to find out. Vivi walked up the stairs, his head tilted toward the ground, not knowing what to expect up ahead. All he knew was that he needed to find out.
