Not Quite Human- One Shot

Summary: Clark makes a startling discovery about his life, and the effects of Kryptonite on him. CK/CS

Clark struggled to breath, he had been in this horrid room for too long. He knew he was going to die soon, he remembered all his friends, his family, the good times he had in his life, and the bad ones. He called out for someone, but the Kryptonite room was killing him, and his voice came out in only a whisper. His breathing became even shallower and he started to see black, as his eyes drooped, and with one last, deep breath, Clark Kent's heart stopped and he was dead.

At least by human standards.

Two hours after he had died, Chloe and Mr. Kent found the room of Kryptonite that Clark had been trapped in. Jonathan rushed to his son's side and called out his name. He checked his son's pulse. Nothing, "We're too late." He said softly, and hearing this, Chloe broke down. She started sobbing silently into her hands. Jonathan's face scrunched up in anguish and he pulled his son close wondering what on earth he was going to do, how would he break this to Martha? How could he have let this happen, how could this have happened? To Clark?

He picked up his son and left the room. Chloe followed suit, still crying. Jonathon kept walking out to his truck, carrying Clark's body, still wondering what to do now. He reached the truck and gently put Clark in the grass as he went to find somewhere to put him in the vehicle, still in shock and not knowing what else to do.

Chloe approached Clark's body and knelt next to him. She grabbed his hand and whispered to him, hoping beyond hope that he could hear her, wherever he was now. "I love you Clark, I'm so sorry." She bent her head down and missed seeing his eyes fluttering a bit, but she did however feel the weak beat in his wrist. She looked to his chest and saw it rise and fall ever so slightly. "Mr-Mr. Kent." She gasped as she saw his breaths get deeper and felt his pulse get stronger. "Mr. Kent!" She yelled just as Clark's eyes flickered open. "Mr. Kent he's alive!" She cried out half shocked half happily. "You're alive." She whispered smiling as Clark looked to her.

"Chloe," Clark whispered to her, "you barely made it, another minute in there and I would have been dead." Just then Jonathan ran up to them, disbelief on his face. "You were dead, Clark. At least, by human standards you were. You had no pulse, and you weren't breathing."

"I came back to life? But it was Kryptonite. I should be dead."

"Maybe you can never die here? On earth that is." Chloe offered. "That would be good, right?"

Clark smiled at her, but he felt even more depressed, thinking that he may never die, than he had felt when he thought he was dying. Immortality? Watching all the people you knew and loved grow old and die, and never being able to rejoin them? Who would want that? Another "gift" to add to the list of cursed blessings. Clark looked at Chloe and envied her for her normality, at the same time as she looked at him and pitied him for the torture she had seen in his eyes as she looked at him. They both knew how much they could not be together now.
