The Silent Grove

Luna sat alone, upon a comfortable rock, in a small clearing of the Forbidden Forest. True, Professor Dumbledore had said that students weren't supposed to come into the forest, but she'd been coming to this clearing for years and nothing bad had ever happened. In fact, she liked it here much more than she did at the school. The castle was full of loud sounds and unknown smells. Here in the clearing, however, there was only the fresh, vibrant sounds and smells of nature.

Smiling serenely to herself, Luna pulled out a notebook and pencil. Parchment and quills may be the standard equipment for the magical community but she had always found that art would out better if it was done the Muggle way. Opening the notebook, Luna flipped through pages of drawings before she found an empty one. After an appraising look around the clearing, Luna began to draw.

It was a very relaxing experience. A gentle breeze blew through the clearing, bringing with it the scents of trees, grass, and earth. The soft, spring sun was shone down upon her, just hot enough that Luna didn't need a sweater but not so hot that she'd begun to sweat. Truly, this was a perfect day.

It took Luna an hour to finish her first drawing. As she flipped to a new page and looked around she found that she wasn't alone. Unbeknownst to her, a centaur had arrived in the clearing and had lain down to take a nap in the warm sun. Luna had encountered the centaurs many times in this clearing and, over the years, had managed to gain at least a partial friendship with them. At the very least, they left her to be so long as she left them be. Although, if one was going to take a nap right in front of her, she didn't see the harm in sketching a picture. She smiled dreamily, placed her pencil on the empty page of the notebook and began to draw.
