Ayano Sugiura and Toshino Kyoko were nineteen and had been dating each other for almost a year. Kyoko often forgot about holidays and other yearly events so Ayano figured that she would have to remind Kyoko about it.
While on a walk Ayano said, "There's a special event that's coming up soon."
Kyoko got excited and asked, "Is the new Mirakurun film coming out?"
Ayano shook her head and said, "No."
Kyoko asked, "Are there finally going to put a painting of Cesar Romero at the local museum?"
Ayano said, "The special event isn't as grand as anything like that."
Kyoko chuckled nervously and said, "I admit that I have no idea what the special event is. What big day is coming up?"
Ayano said, "The one year anniversary of our first date."
Kyoko replied, "That was the best day of my life."
Ayano blushed with embarrassment and said, "Don't be so hyperbolic."
Kyoko replied, "I'm just being honest. This has been the best year of my life and I'm pretty sure it's the best year that you've ever had too."
Ayano continued blushing while saying, "It has been my favorite year."
Kyoko replied, "I'm already excited for that day."
Ayano responded, "Me too."
Kyoko said, "I better start shopping." She kissed Ayano and said, "I'll see you later."
Ayano and Kyoko went to separate malls to do their one year anniversary shopping. Ayano went home while smiling and humming.
Ayano's mom said, "You seem happier than usual."
Ayano said, "I've been dating Toshino Kyoko for almost a year. We're going to celebrate that special day in a few days."
Ayano's mom replied, "How adorable."
Ayano went to her room and started writing a speech on a piece of paper. After she finished her long speech she started practicing the speech.
Ayano's mom walked into Ayano's room and said, "I heard a lot of talking even though you're alone. What's going on?"
Ayano said, "I wrote a speech that's about my feelings for Kyoko. I'm practicing on how to say it to make sure that Kyoko likes it."
Ayano's mom replied, "I'm sure she'll love it no matter what."
Ayano stubbornly said, "I have to make sure that I sound great."
Ayano's mom replied, "Don't wear out your voice." Ayano spent most of the evening working on the speech.
A few days later it was Ayano and Kyoko's one year anniversary, but Ayano got a sour throat from wearing out her voice on the speech.
Ayano's mom opened Ayano's bedroom door and saw a giant pile of neatly stacked tissues next to Ayano's bed. Ayano was in bed and looked sick. Ayano's mom said, "You look bad."
Ayano sarcastically said, "What a thoughtful thing to say."
Ayano's mom replied, "I wasn't trying to insult you. I just meant that you look pretty sick."
Ayano said, "I ignored your advice about not using up my voice. I'm sorry."
Ayano's mom replied, "I'll take a day off from work to take care of you. I'll go to the store to get you some medicine and quickly come back."
Ayano said, "Thank you."
A short time later Ayano's cellphone rang. Ayano picked up the phone and said, "Hi Kyoko."
Kyoko smiled and replied, "Greetings honey. What time should we meet up for our anniversary celebration?"
Ayano said, "I can't celebrate the anniversary today."
Ayano's voice was affected by her soar throat, but Kyoko was too clueless to realize that. Kyoko asked, "How come you can't celebrate this day?"
Ayano said, "I'm sorry Kyoko, but I don't feel like talking. I'll call you tomorrow."
Kyoko said, "Don't hang up."
After the phone call was over Kyoko called Yui and Chinatsu. Yui asked, "What's up Kyoko?"
Kyoko answered, "I need relationship advice."
Yui asked, "What's going on?"
Kyoko answered, "My one year anniversary with Ayano is today, but she doesn't want to see me today."
Yui asked, "Do you have any clue about why she wouldn't have to see you?"
Kyoko said, "I have no clue."
Chinatsu asked, "Have you considered visiting her and asking her about it?"
Kyoko giggled nervously and said, "I didn't think of that."
Chinatsu sighed and said, "You're so gullible."
Kyoko jokingly said, "I always appreciate your supportive comments."
A short time later Kyoko got on a yellow dress and went to Ayano's house. She knocked on the door for several seconds. Ayano's mom opened the door and said, "Hi Kyoko. Can I help you?"
Kyoko said, "I'm here to visit Ayano."
Ayano's mom replied, "I'm sorry, but this isn't a good time."
Kyoko said, "Ayano told me that too. I want to know why our one anniversary is a day she thinks isn't a good time for me to visit. What's up with her?"
Ayano's mom said, "She's sick."
Kyoko replied, "Oh." Kyoko looked down at the ground while feeling guilty for thinking that Ayano was purposely trying to avoid Kyoko.
Ayano's mom said, "She got a soar throat from practicing a speech she made for you."
Kyoko smiled and said, "That's one of the cutest things that I've ever heard. I'm going to go visit her right now."
Ayano's mom replied, "But she's still sick."
Kyoko said, "I don't care if she gets me sick." Kyoko went into Ayano's room and said, "Happy one anniversary Ayano!"
Ayano asked, "What are you doing here Kyoko? I could get you sick."
Kyoko asked, "Who cares about a stupid thing like that on this glamorous day? I'm staying."
Ayano said, "Okay, but can you wait in the living room for a few minutes? I'm still in my pajamas."
Kyoko said, "Sure."
After Kyoko left the room Ayano got on a black dress. Ayano said, "You can come back in."
Kyoko opened the door and said, "My mom told me that you got sick, because you spent so much time on a speech for me."
Ayano angrily blushed and said, "I'm afraid that's correct. I practiced the speech over twenty times, but I don't have the throat power to say it as eloquently as I want to."
Kyoko replied, "Then I'll read it." Ayano nervously handed the speech to Kyoko.
The speech said, "Dear Toshino Kyoko, When I first met you I thought that I couldn't stand you. It turns out that the reason I couldn't stand you wasn't because I was jealous that you were the only girl who got better grades than me. I couldn't stand you, because I liked you and I was too scared to say you. I tried to be your rival so I would have an excuse to visit you without having to tell you how I feel. Part of me was glad that you never notice how I truly felt, but a big part of me wanted to scream out that I like you. It took over five years for me to admit that I have a crush on you. We've only been dating for a year, but this year has been better than all of those other years combined. I'm so glad that the universe gave me such a beautiful and fun loving girlfriend. I look forward to our second year of dates. I love you more than anything my former rival and eternal love."
Kyoko said, "What a lovely speech sweetheart." Kyoko kissed Ayano.
Ayano said, "Kissing me while I'm sick is a terrible idea. You'll probably get sick."
Kyoko replied, "Big deal. When I get sick you can kiss me."
Ayano handed Kyoko a present. Kyoko opened it. It was the Mirakurun doll that she wanted. Kyoko got excited and said, "Thank you. I've been wanting this for months."
Kyoko had a big present for Ayano. Ayano opened it. It was a painting of Cesar Romero. Ayano asked, "Where did you get this?"
Kyoko answered, "An artist named Naoko Satomi painted it for a good price. It's fun watching her paint. The wind rises across the sky when she paints."
Ayano said, "Um, it's very nice."
Kyoko replied, "Before he was the Joker he was known as a Latin lover." Kyoko admired the painting.
Ayano said, "It seems like you got the painting for yourself."
Kyoko replied, "It's for you, but I'll come by often and look at it."
Ayano said, "I love you."
Kyoko responded, "I love you too."
Ayano said, "I'm sorry for getting myself sick. I'm pathetic."
Kyoko shook her head and said, "Don't ever call yourself that. You got sick by practicing the beautiful speech that you wrote for me. That's very romantic."
Ayano smiled and said, "Thank you Kyoko. I would of had a day of miserable disappointment if you hadn't been bold enough to visit."
Kyoko replied, "I had a wonderful one anniversary with you. I'm already excited for our second year anniversary."
Ayano said, "Maybe I'll write you another speech."
Kyoko replied, "Don't practice the next speech as much as you did with the previous speech."
Ayano said, "Okay." Kyoko held Ayano's hand. Ayano said, "I feel too tired to do anything else."
Kyoko replied, "Go to sleep honey. You've earned an early rest." Ayano laid down on her bed and closed her eyes. Kyoko gently played with Ayano's hair for a few minutes. She kissed Ayano on the hand and whispered, "Goodnight my eternal love." Although Ayano was sleeping she knew what happened. She had a big smile on her face for the rest of the day.
