My name is Alexander.

I was born in Tirragen, a small barony in the hills and rivers among the heart of Tortall. When I was ten years old, I was sent from the comfort of my home to the Palace, in Corus.

I never really liked the idea of being a knight. Knights were huge, towering people, gleaming in silvery armour, doing great deeds. What I wanted- what I wanted, simply put, was to fight.

When I was six I remember there was a visitor to our hall. I was just old enough tobe allowed to sit at the table with my nurse, just above the salt.

The stranger was handsome. He had dark brown hair, and smiled a lot. He spoke during the first course with my sister, and she became so flustered that Alyce, graceful Alyce, spilled her wine and had to excuse herself from the hall.

In the silence then the stranger laughed with my father. They had been pages in the same year and still were friends. When my father mentioned that in four years he would send me to train, the stranger- little me could barely remember his name was Roger- smiled and said "Well, young Alex, have you ever seen a duel?" My mother laughed and protested, but my father smiled, covered her hand, and nodded.

In a daze of women's skirts hurrying me along, I was swept into a large hall near the courtyard. Being small and living in a peaceful part of the realm, I had never understood what a room with so many mirrors not used by women was for.

Elsa, my nursemaind (horrible breed them) wiped my nose and by the time I could see again, my father and the sranger were in the middle of the room. They were holding swords. I wnted to make them stop, but Alyce held my arm. I heard Elsa whisper. "That Conte Duke's one of the best- if 'twernt for Roald's young'n, he'd be next as King."

I'll never forget it; they fought with grace and it almost looked like they were dancing.

It would be another decade before I would ever see him fight again.
