"Do you know that before you, my life before you was mundane?" I had to ask, gasping for breath, as we ran, hiding behind a wall from the phaser-fire.
"And is that a good thing?" he asked me, giving me an amused look.
"Well -" I was cut off as he turned away from me and shot some rounds off towards our enemy, and then quickly plastered himself against the wall again. "All I'm saying is-" I was cut off again as he grabbed my arm and we both started running, praying to whatever higher power actually existed that we survived. "I use to like science fiction an awful lot, but -" again I was cut off as the Doctor saw another cover-place and we hid behind it. "I don't think it likes me!"
The doctor nodded in the way that he does as he peeked over the boxes and shot off another couple of rounds towards the Daleks. He looked behind us, towards the exit, and then looked at me pointedly.
"Oooh no." I said. "There is no way I'm going out there without you and your super screw-driver."
"Sonic Screwdriver, actually."
"Whatever!"
He actually paused and looked at me, slightly astonished. "Did you just say.. 'whatever' ..to a Time Lord?"
"Er."
The Doctor took me by the shoulders, and looked me in the eye, his eyes full of kindness. "Go." he said softly. "You've got an awful lot of running to do."
"And what do I do once I'm out there?"
The Doctor shrugged. "Hopefully I'll be there. Now. Run for your life!" he pushed me, forcing me out in the open, and I ran towards the doorway as fast as I could, Dalek fire barely missing me.
I stumbled out into the sunlight, which seemed unreasonably bright and harsh, and found myself looking down at a very familiar pair of shoes. Slowly I looked up, until I was looking into the eyes of the Doctor. "I'm not even going to ask how." I told him, grinning ear-to-ear.
"Come on," he said kindly. "There's still so much to see. Galaxies, planets, moons…!" I didn't even bother looking behind me as I stepped into his little blue box. The Doctor was more than a mystery, I knew that. He always disregarded time and space, but thankfully for me, he always did his best to take care of his friends.
