Shinigami

The old nun looked up from where she was repairing a set of pants for one of the many children that lived in the church's orphanage and froze. There was a figure kneeling in front of the wall-mounted cross. The cross was all that was left of the trappings that had come with the church when it moved to L2, the rest having been sold to pay the various expenses that both the church and orphanage accumulated over time.

The person, who she knew to be male, was on one knee, head bowed and palms together in prayer. His clothes seemed to blend in with the shadows, undoubtedly making him almost impossible to see from any more than ten feet away, even in the semi-light of the church.

From her position at the base of the cross, not five feet from him, the nun took in the man's appearance; heavy black boots, close-fitting black jeans, a black tank top that almost seemed to be painted on, a semi-loose black button up shirt, left hanging open, and black scarf wrapped around his face to hide everything but an pair of amazing purple eyes that were currently half-closed and lined with heavy black kohl, all topped off with an almost three foot long, dark chestnut braid that now lay over his shoulder and across his lap.

The nun held her breath as the shadowed figure stood and melded back into the hollows of the night, leaving behind a bag sitting on the altar. She shakily put aside her sewing and stood to examine its contents.

As she stared in wonder at the amount of money inside she knew that in the morning there would be news of another dead gang leader who had hurt the wrong innocent, or perhaps that one of the supply ships that would never lower themselves to selling to L2 had been robbed and it's contents stolen, only to show up in the hands of various parents, children and homeless. And always, always the scene would have Shinigami's calling card. Scrawled on a large, flat surface, usually a wall, would be the words 'FORGIVE ME FATHER, FOR I HAVE SINNED.'

{But for now... for now the children will eat. And,} she thought as she looked up at the cross on the wall, {perhaps we will be able keep this cross for little while longer.}
