James Potter, Pureblood Wizard and prankster extraordinaire, was in love. Completely and wholly in love.

Nobody believed him, of course-why would they?

It was practically universally acknowledged that James had dated half of the girls at Hogwarts. And kissed the other half.

Well, excluding the Slytherin girls, that is.

After all, who would want to kiss a Slytherin?

Anyway, back to it.

Nobody believed that James Potter was in love, because the girl that he had fallen in love with was perhaps the last girl in the world that the vast majority of the population of Hogwarts would have expected him to do so with.

Why, you ask?

Let me tell you.

It wasn't to do with her looks, that's for sure. It was said that her fiery hair and sparkling green eyes had made many a boy fall in love with her at first sight.

Her personality certainly wasn't a problem, for it was recognised by many, James included, that her flaming temper would be the perfect match for his calm and collected aura.

It wasn't to do with the number of detentions that Lily had given James in his fifth year.

Or the number of time she had slapped him in their first.

It wasn't even to do with her blood status, as most of the Witches and Wizards of Hogwarts saw no problem with a Pureblood dating a Muggleborn: it would not have surprised them in the slightest.

No.

The one reason why the near entire population of Hogwarts refused to believe that a flirtatious player such as James Potter could ever fall in love with a girl such as Lily Evans wasn't really even to do with Lily.

James Potter just didn't commit.

Think about it for a minute.

A striking young Quidditch player, with exceptional school grades and a penchant for mischief making, would most assuredly have girls flinging themselves at him left, right and centre.

And he did, as mentioned above.

So I believe that you might now be able to understand why the population of Hogwarts didn't believe that James was in love.

Who, in the right mind, would choose to settle with one girl at such a young age, when he could essentially have his pick of around two hundred girls?

James Potter, apparently.

And, when he turned the tenth girl down after declaring his love for Lily, people started to believe him.

They saw the look in his eyes every time he spoke to her.

They saw the way he nervously ran his hand through his hair every time she walked past him in the corridor.

They heard the sound of his heart cracking in two when he discovered that Lily had gotten her first boyfriend at the age of sixteen.

They saw him fall, trip and stumble for Lily Evans.

Yes, James Potter was most definitely in love.
