I Remember, I remember, of a long paved path in late November

When the sky was dull and black and the wind blew cold upon my back

It was here where my directions died, and where the darkness was my only guide

This walk was pleasant and steady in time, until the thing pursued behind.

The long dark road stretched far ahead and into lights the future tread

But as I walked fast upon the trail, my greatest efforts were to no avail

The thing stretched long and fast behind me, breathing nothing and running blindly

I ran long and fast ahead, for towards the light the path did tread

I reached the light where the dark was banished but all the same my pursuer vanished

I stood in query and waited long, thinking of ways to move along

I took a breath and looked around, darkness covered all the ground

It was then that had I decided, to run towards home, fast and un-beguiled

As I left the thing flew forth, and I took off running towards the north

I ran fast but it kept pace, making no noise yet gaining hast

Faster than I ran ahead, yet it grew closer as I tread

The thing moved fast but I moved faster, it claws around me like an aster

I could feeling it breathing down my neck and the faster I ran up towards my deck

I jumped up the stairs and opened the door only to find it had made it there before

I screeched at its sight until I seized, this was a sight I could not believe

The thing that had pursed me long

The thing that ran so far and long

The thing that was no friend of light

And the thing that chased me all that night

For only hollow it did bore

It was my shadow and nothing more.
