"I missed you today."

Juliet O'Hara sat down in the grass and wrapped her arms around herself. The sun was shining brightly, and she could hear birds chirping in nearby trees.

"I missed you, too."

She smiled softly. "You did?"

"Of course I did. I miss you every day."

A lump formed in her throat. "There's not a second I don't miss you."

"It's not a competition."

She almost laughed at that as her partner smiled at her. "No, it's not. But I do miss you."

"I know you do." He sighed. "I know it's hard on you."

"You'll never know how hard," she agreed sadly.

"But I have a pretty good idea."

"I loved you. Did you know that?"

"Yeah, I knew."

She closed her eyes, and memories of that horrible day came crashing around her. The gunshot, the coppery scent of blood, her hands shaking so hard that she could barely hold him…

"I love you, Juliet."

"I love you, too, Carlton," she whispered. Her eyes opened, and he was gone, just as she knew he would be. Her blue-green eyes settled on the headstone beside her, inscribed with her partner's name, two dates (one that would be forever etched into her memory) and four simple words.

Forever In Our Hearts.

It was sappy and sentimental, and he would have hated it. But it was the truth. He had left a permanent mark on her heart. Her hands moved to settle over the slight swell of her abdomen. She didn't even get the chance to tell him that he was going to be a father, and maybe that was the biggest tragedy of all.

After a while, she finally got to her feet. Then she reached out and rested her hand briefly against the cool marble where his name was etched.

"I'll be back in a few days, Carlton." She wiped at her eyes as she turned away.

"I love you."

Fin.
