Eleven-year-old Daria Morgendorffer inspected the owl skull she'd found a few days ago, then laid it back on the anthill so the ants could finish cleaning it. A rustling sound caused her to look up. Out of a blackberry thicket beside the trail came a small possum. It sat up and made a little sneezing/wheezing noise. " heef. "
"What's that, Opie?" Daria said.
The possum made a combing gesture with one front paw. " heef.>"
"Uh, Quinn? Something about Quinn?"
" heef.>"
"Well if it's Quinn, she must be in trouble. Is it a bear?"

"A wolf?"

Daria, who knew him very well, cound sense Opie's mounting frustration. "A... Quinn didn't fall down a well, did she?"

"Again? Damn, I mean Jiminy! How many abandoned wells are there around here! Well, let's go get... what's that? Timmy?"

"Oh, cra... I mean, oh, fiddlesticks. That's not like Timmy. His hormones must be kicking in. No telling what Quinn might do to the poor boy down in that well. All right, I'll go get some men with a ladder... what? A skunk?"

"Oh, good. Lassie's probably already fetched the police, the fire department, the operator, and the board of deacons."

"Well hell, I mean golly, Opie, that well should be almost full by now. Maybe I'll just stampede a cow into it and they can all climb out on her back." Daria sighed. "Come on, boy, lead me to 'em."
Opie turned and waddled quickly down the trail. Young Daria trotted after him. "Good boy, Opie!"
