Chapter 1
Leonardo was not surprised when his well-laid plan got blown to bits. Literally. It was supposed to have been just a normal training run, an eight-mile round-trip over New York's roofs. No muss, no fuss, and home by midnight for a good night's sleep. But, of course, Leo should have known that his plan wouldn't go smoothly the moment he conceived it (funnily enough, things went a lot less bumpy when he simply improvised. Go figure) and so now, with a pack of Purple Dragons and Foot ninja behind him, he led his brothers across the roofs in full retreat because, ninja and skilled and courageous though he was, he was not stupid enough to engage fifty-plus enemies. At least, not today.
A near-silent click alerted him to even more Purple Dragons only twenty yards away: a group of six all armed with various weapons of varying efficacy from lead pipes to chains and, oh, look, a Smith and Wesson magnum.
"DOWN!" Leo shouted, throwing himself into Mikey who was on his eight and in the immediate path of the gunfire.
The bullet whizzed over their heads, and Leo distinctly heard Raph snarl and take a step toward the thugs.
"Leave it!" Leo commanded, grabbing his baby brother by the arm and hauling him upright. A rapid scan confirmed that Mikey was not bleeding and still breathing. "Street level now!"
Don used his bō to block Raph's advance. "You heard him! Move!"
"Stop them! Before they reach the sewers!"
With one eye still on his brothers who were once more in full flight, Leo glanced over his shoulder at the nearing horde. Palming a shuriken, he let it fly straight at the gang member with the magnum. His kill did not faze the rest. They kept coming, a wave of black mixed with civilian clothing.
How did tonight go so wrong?
A whistle of something incoming was his only warning before Don went down with a cry, his ankles ensnared in bolas.
Raph and Mikey both spun to help but Leo was already cutting Donnie loose with a kunai.
"We can't keep runnin', Leo!" Raph grunted, his chest heaving with every breath.
"We're not fighting all that, Raph!" Leo shot back, throwing five shuriken in lightning-quick succession at the nearest five humans. All five dropped. He fingered a handful of smoke pellets and glanced to Mikey who also had a bunch of the bombs in hand. "The nearest manhole is in that alley," he added more quietly, jerking his chin to the wide gap between the buildings. It was thirty feet to the ground with no fire escape but thank Fate their current edifice was made of brick: the uneven surface would give them decent purchase for a descent. "On my command…"
Raph helped Donnie to his feet while Leo and Mikey stood in front and retreated slowly, smoke bombs in hand and ready.
"Wait…" Leo hissed through his teeth, his eyes never leaving the oncoming rush of death. He smiled. Death would have to wait. "Now!"
He and Mikey slammed their pellets down and the resulting plume of purple smoke spilled twenty feet in every direction.
In just that second, as Leo heard his brothers turn to climb down the three-story-high building, something landed with a clunk and rolled into his sparse sight.
He panicked for a split moment: his entire body seized, his eyes widened, his mouth tried to work. Then the moment ended, he found his voice, "GRENADE!" and the world exploded.
He never heard his brothers' screams as he was blown off the roof. He was unconscious before he hit the ground.
