Decisions that change lives

It was a hard decision for Richard Webber. He had to choose which of his departments were getting a million dollar grant. He had it down to two. Derek Shepherd or Owen Hunt. When he first heard Derek he was the clear winner, but when Miranda Bailey came in and pointed out practicality he wasn't sure. While Derek's would give the hospital a great reputation if he succeeded, Owen's was practical. This would be a never ending debate for him. Suddenly, he heard a voice. A familiar one. He couldn't be hearing this voice, she was dead, she died years ago on the day of that horrific ferryboat accident. The voice told him who to choose. That he knew it all along, he just needed that final push. He trusted the owner of the voice. In fact, he loved her at one point. He took her advice.

He walked out and found the attending surrounding the nurse's station. "Congratulations, Derek. I expect research on your technique on my desk as soon as possible."

"Thank you Sir." was all he could manage. Derek kept a straight face but inside, he couldn't wait to tell his wife, the inspiration for his work.

He excepted the nods of congratulations from the other attendings and went off to find her. There she was, like she was waiting for him. "I won." he told her

She hugged him and asked him, "What was your idea?"

"I'm going to find a cure for Alzheimer's."

This time she didn't hug him. She kissed him with passion, tears rolling down her face. They didn't need words, he knew exactly how she felt. She was happy, she might not have to live with the disease her mother cursed her with. He didn't have to ask her to help him, he knew she would. She watched her mother live with this disease, she knew she may have it, she would do anything to get rid of it. So, they walked, hand in hand out the doors of the hospital, tonight they would sleep. Tomorrow they had to begin research.
