A/N: This is a oneshot because Gelus's name is spelled wrong in the character settings. So, I decided to write this. This is a oneshot about the day that Gelus died for Misa. (Even though I hate the b****)

Enjoy :) ~M.M.

Gelus watched the numbers above Misa's head slowly run out. He knew that today was the day, but he couldn't fathom why. She looked so healthy...she was so young...

He took no comfort in the fact that Rem was standing behind him, watching the action unfolding below.

As the man approached Misa with a knife, the space where Gelus's heart clenched. So that was it, then. Killed by an obsessed fan or co-worker.

Gelus's mind raced. What could he do? What could he possibly do to save Misa? It was such a simple answer that he was surprised he hadn't thought of it before...but it would end up killing him, too...

Gelus hadn't planned on dieing, but it appeared that that was the only way to save the one he loved, so...

His hand sprung into action, scribbling the man's name across a blank page of his Death Note. He heard Rem exclaiming in surprise and shock, asking what he was doing. She was frantic. Gelus couldn't feel his feet anymore. He looked down to see that they were crumbling away, turning into dust.

His shaking hands dropped both his pencil and Death Note to the ground. The man whose name Gelus had written was flailing uncontrollably on the street in the Human Realm. Misa looked on with horror. Did she actually care that the one who was going to kill her himself was dying? Or was she just surprised? Either way, Gelus supposed, it didn't matter. Misa was safe, at least for now. He watched at the numbers above her head started growing.

Gelus felt a wonderful sensation of peace come over him, though his disintegrating limbs still shook. Peace...finally... I love you, Misa. You may never know that it was I who saved you, but perhaps one day you'll know that...I love...you...

Misa turned and ran down the street, far away from her now-dead attacker. Rem watched silently, though her mouth was agape, as Gelus completely disappeared into dust and whatever else made up a Shinigami. She bent and picked up his fallen Death Note.

Rem paused, as if contemplating something, and then unfurled her wings as she descended into the Human Realm. If Gelus had died protecting the girl, then it was now Rem's job.

A/N: Not exactly too sad, I suppose...but still pretty depressing. I mean, he really risked his life for...THAT? Uck. Anyway. Review! ~M.M.
