I didn't know what I was expecting when I first met him. I mean, newly orphaned, I guess I was just hoping for a home, but I got so much more.

I was born and raised in Halley's traveling circus as part of the acrobat group, the Flying Grayson's. Life was great. I had friends, my parents, and the ability to fly through the air (even if it was more of falling). Then one night, during a fateful performance the lines snapped while my parents were preforming. They fell to their deaths. He had been there that night, and again at the funeral. In fact he funded the funeral. I was thankful, but there wasn't much that a newly orphaned eight year old like me could think of other than what I'd just lost.

I was genuinely surprised when he took me in. So here I was, eight years old, now living in a mansion, with a billionaire for a dad. Life couldn't get any better, until it did.

See, the manor is on a hill at the edge of the island Gotham is on, way outside the city limits. So behind the manor was a beach. I would go down there a lot to play or just think.

One night, I had had a nightmare and gone down to the beach to calm down. I sat on one of the rocks at the beach, watching the tide. It was fairly quiet, except for the soft sound of the waves. Then there was a loud splash and I thought I had seen a figure jump into the water a ways off. Startled, I quickly stood up, but because I had stood up too quickly I slipped on the wet rock, luckily the water which I fell into was deep, very deep, since I'd been quite a ways from the shallow beach. Unluckily for me, I didn't know how to swim. Sinking into the murky waters, unable to get air from the surface, I thought I was going to die. No one knew I was out here. Suddenly, just as my vision started going black, strong arms grabbed hold of me, lifting me out of the water and onto the beach. I lay on the beach, coughing up water and just as my vision faded I got a look at the figure that had saved me. It looked like him, but, why did he have a fish tail? No, it was a mermaid's tail.

The next morning I woke up, in bed. I didn't know how I'd gotten there. Maybe, the previous night had just been a dream. I promptly sneezed, or maybe not, seeing as I had now developed a mysterious cold. I wrapped up in my blanket and trudged downstairs for breakfast. Luckily it was Saturday. When I got to the table I was surprised to see him with a cup of coffee, reading the newspaper. I sat at my seat and checked under the table to see if he had a tail. Not finding anything suspicious, I looked at him to see him looking at me with a raised eyebrow, though he didn't say anything about it. Instead, "Are you doing better, Dick?" he asked. I didn't say anything because I was at a loss for words. "Dick?" he asked again, sounding a bit worried. "You're a mermaid! " I blurted, no longer able to contain myself. He sighed, folding up his newspaper "Merman, Dick. I'm a merman. I figured you would find out sooner or later," He said. I was shocked. He had openly acknowledged it as truth. "Where is your tail?" I asked, now confused. "I only have a tail in water. That's why I'm very careful around the sprinkler," he said. I laughed a bit. "Dick I took you in so you could have something I didn't have a chance to have growing up, a family. I know I can't replace your parents but I want to do the best I can for you," He said. I smiled brightly and got off my seat, running over to him, and hugged him.

And that's how this started. After I'd gotten over my cold he took me out to the ocean and used his powers to turn me into a merman like him because I asked. Over the years I've learned to understand the powers and responsibilities that come with being a merman/maid. My tail has also changed colors a number of times. He said it's normal for that to happen as I find who I am inside.

Now, I finally had a home.
