"She smiles."
"Was that a tear in your eye?"
"No, no, no, no. Merely the breeze."

Booth stole a glance at his partner – his very… lovely, rational partner – and finally managed to get through to her that he had fresh, hot coffee.

He nodded absently as she rambled on, pretending to understand what she was saying; he just wanted to take a sip of his caffeinated drink, no matter how scalded he would get. He turned to tell Bones to mind herself when he noticed she was raising the cup to her lips. Those thin, redstop it, Booth. Focus.

Before he could stop himself, he shouted "Hey!" and covered his hand over the cup, hoping frantically that he wasn't too late. She couldn't hurt herself when he would be able to stop it, and right when they were just getting back together – as partners, that is – it was absolutely, unacceptable. "That's hot!"

It came out more frantically than he had meant it to as the heat rose and slightly burned him, making him wince inwardly. The next moment, chills were running up his spine – her top lip was just touching his hand.

He found himself gazing into her eyes- lost in the fantasy of what might happen if he was to press his hand closer to her mouth, or even better, throwing away her coffee and sliding closer – he had missed her, so, so much, it had almost been painful, although he hadn't wanted to admit it. Now she was so close – closer than she had been in almost three months, and she was actually lookingat him. Really looking.

"You're gonna burn yourself, Bones," he murmured, and, now that the danger was past, spent a little more time drowning in those beautiful eyes of hers. And then the reality of the situation sunk in, and so did the embarrassment. He tried not to let it show, but he felt things shift between them. It was much more… intimate than it had been, like in the vault when he had fallen on top of her. Even now he didn't have a difficult time remembering every lovely curve – he shook himself away from his very dangerous thoughts and tried to focus, again.

But it was still there, there in her beautiful eyes.

"Thank you," she murmured back.

He smiled, she smiled, they spoke, but the moment still lingered – their old comrade was back, but Booth couldn't help but be slightly disappointed when they laughed it off – and couldn't help but wonder if Bones had felt the same.

Sorry it was so short?
