And Hear Us As We Cry To Thee
The S.S Minnow had set out on another three hour tour in the South Pacific. The weather was beautiful with no storms in the forecast. The passengers were enjoying the trip very much.
"Oh Thurston, this is quite an interesting experience. Now we know what the simple folk do." Said socialite Eunice," Lovey" Howell, who had never traveled on a boat that was not a yacht or luxury cruise ship before.
"Yes dear. This ship was also built by one of my companies too you know!" replied her husband, industrial tycoon Thurston Howell III.
"Mrs. Howell, may I ask what you mean by simple folk?" Asked Dr. Roy Hinkley, a professor with multiple degrees, who thought that simple folk, might have implied he was unintelligent.
"Oh it's from the musical Camelot. It's what Queen Guinevere says to King Arthur in a song about the peasants. Thurston and I seldom spend time with people who aren't on the Social Register." Explained Lovey.
"Richard Burton was in that." Said the redhead movie star Ginger Grant.
"I have that soundtrack. It's a wonderful musical." Said Marry Ann, a Kansas farm girl.
"Yes it is." Said Lovey, who had never thought she'd be talking to a farm girl from Kansas.
All of a sudden black storm clouds approached. A few minutes later the weather started getting rough. The Skipper, Jonas Grumby remained as calm as he could as he and his first mate, Gilligan tried to steer the ship to safety. The others were not as calm.
Everyone else besides Gilligan, go off deck. It's far too dangerous out here.
"Thurston, this weather is so unpleasant. I'm frightened", said Lovey as she and the others went behind a small window.
"A Howell frightened Lovey, I mean really!" Exclaimed Thurston, clutching his teddy bear, knuckles turning white.
"I don't think there is a high chance that this boat can withstand the storm",said the professor.
"If the boat can't withstand the storm then what… Oh God no, I don't want to die at sea!" Said Lovey, after realizing what might happen.
"I'm sure there must be signal flairs or lifejackets on board."
"Yes professor, there must be some!" Declared Mary Ann.
"Maybe we'll find another boat to rescue us. That happened in a movie I was in. They sent out signal flairs and were rescued", explained Ginger.
"I just thought of something my mother said she did when she was on a sinking ship. She prayed that she would live. She was able to get into a life boat and thinks her survival may have been because of that. Would anyone like to try praying?", Asked Lovey.
"I think that's a wonderful idea Mrs. Howell", said Marry Ann, who regularly attended her country church in Kansas.
"What a wonderful idea, Lovey. Let's pray that the Lord protects us. If we perish, I hope we go to that safety deposit box in the sky", said Thurston.
Lovey, Thurston and Mary Ann held hands and bowed their heads and silently prayed as well as the professor and Ginger, although they did not join the circle. Lovey than remembered the words to the hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save. She began to sing," and hear us as we cry to thee, for those in peril on the sea." Shortly after that the group was shipwrecked on a deserted isle. Lovey had a feeling that God may have had something to do with it.
