Oh, and this is rated T, partly for gore and violence, partly because I'm paranoid!

Chapter One: Bad News

"Alistri? Alistri, can you hear me?" Legolas's faint voice gently shook Alistri awake.

"Wha- what happened?" She asked, her voice shaky. "Where am I? Where is my bow? And why does it feel like I've been trampled, set on fire, and then thrown in the lake to put out the flames?"She tried to sit up, but immediately felt dizzy. Legolas caught her as she fell, easing her back down.

"Take it easy, Alistri. You're badly injured. And to answer your questions, you're in Mirkwood. Tauriel found you and brought you here. Your bow is safe in my father's armory. And you were fighting some orcs, and then, well, you really did fall in the lake..."

"Alright. Now would you care to explain why I have no sight in my right eye?"

"Ummm... Tauriel!" Alistri got worried at this. Whenever her husband had to give her bad news, he usually made Tauriel, Alistri's sister, do it instead. Tauriel had always been better at letting people down easy.

"Yes, Legolas?"

"Alistri wants to know what happened to her eye..."

"Oh. Well, um, there were orcs... and one of them stabbed you... in the eye... and, well, I guess that explains it..."

"What? But... I-I-I never get close enough... h-how could this happen? How could I-" the rest of Alistri's sentence was cut off as she let out a sob and buried her face in Legolas's chest. Tauriel quietly left the room, sensing that the two of them would rather be left alone.

Legolas pulled his distraught wife closer, until she was sitting on his lap.

"Shhh... It's okay. It wasn't your fault. Things happen, we make mistakes. It's going to be alright, you'll see. You'l learn to live without that eye. And I'll be there beside you, every step of the way."

"B-but... what about my bow? I can't shoot anymore, can I?"

"Of course you can! I'll teach you how to shoot half-blind! I had to do it for a while when my left eye was injured and I had to wear a patch until it healed."

"But... I must look horrible! I mean, my face is probably all mangled and bloody, and, and.."

Legolas put a finger to Alistri's lips to quiet her. "Yes, your face is pretty messed up, and there will be a lot of permanent scarring. But I love you, Alistri. And no matter how ugly you are, you will always be beautiful to me."
