Her short hair fluttered in the wind as she leapt from roof to roof, her golden eyes trained in front of her. As soon as she saw the school building, Rui jumped down, towards the ground. The wind hissed in her ears, her long skirt flapped and her hair whipped her face, but Rui was loving it. Every morning her "walk" to school was the highlight of her day, where she could feel the adrenalin rushing through her veins, the energy pulsing through her, making Rui feel invincible. She grinned (a very rare thing for her to do) as she abruptly slowed down before she could hit the ground. Her feet lightly tapped the pavement as she delicately landed, her hair a black halo around her head, golden eyes glinting in the sun, before disappearing in the shadows.
Rui's POV
I sigh as I step out of the shadows and into the school building, greeted by the noisy chatter. A girl with short green hair and another one with short blonde hair, pins and a bow race past me, laughing and smiling. As soon as I enter the classroom, the noise dies down and everyone quickly looks away before peering at me through the corners of their eyes. I silently make my way to my seat, smirking inwardly. Cowards. Just because I can see ghosts doesn't mean I'm death itself. Speaking of ghosts, a small one hovers over me as I look out of the window. "Please," it whispers, " please send me back to hell!" I narrow my orange eyes and hiss under my breath. "And why exactly do you think I can bring you back?!" A few people glance towards me before resuming their conversations. It seems Kiyoteru-sensei is late. "Because", the ghost whines "you can see me! You have powers! Your family is renown for exorcism and witchcraft! You have devil powers!" "Shut it!" I snap. The class immediately whips around to stare at me, stunned. I hadn't realized I was so loud. A few people snicker as I breeze past them towards the door, the ghost at my heels. Needless to say, I have no friends. The last one I had… I shake my head as the ghost tries to question me about my social status. "I mean, look at you. Dressed like that, no wonder people think you're scary! I know your uniform is a black sailor outfit, but shorten that skirt! Ditch the black tights !Wear short sleeves with a cute sweater! What about those clips in your hair, you should replace them with-" "NO!" I shout as the ghost tries to pull them out of my bangs. "DON'T TOUCH THEM!" I snarl. The ghost shrinks away, a calculating look on its face. "Fine, just return me already."
Flashback
"Rui-chan, Rui-chan, look! I got you these!" exclaims a small boy, holding out two white pins in his hand. Rui turns around, a large grin spread across her face. "Rei-kun! Happy late seventh birthday!" Rei giggles. "You silly! We have the same birthday!" He pinches her nose softly. "We aren't twins" Rui growls, before laughing. Their resemblance is uncanny: same features, wide, golden eyes, delicate stature, and identical height. They are mirrored versions of each other, people say. Rui happily puts the pins in her hair, smiling from ear to ear. She digs in her pocket, and pulls out a small silver bracelet. Giggling, she slips it around his wrist. He laughs and takes her by the hand, running towards the forest, out of the school grounds. "Rei-kun", she asks suddenly, "why are you cold to everyone except me?" Embarrassed, he hugs her tightly and whispers "because you're the only one that isn't annoying." "I can be annoying!" she protests, pouting. He laughs, pinching her cheeks. "But I like you."
Finally we are on the rooftop, and I sigh tiredly. I can now rid myself of this annoying ghost!
