There were no ties for him, there never had been. He had grown up, gone out into the world only to find that he didn't belong. He knew nothing of what he was, could not explain why he could do the things that he could do, why he felt the hunger gnawing at him always. He closed his eyes and thought of Elle, and the brief time he had allowed himself to be happy. Had that been real?
He thought of what he had done later on, when the black sun had gone and his hunger had returned. He could hear her agonizing screams still bouncing around in his head, see the blood dribble down her forehead, he could still smell the acrid scent of smoke as he burned the body. Afterwards, when all was said and done, he felt nothing. He had spent so long wanting her and then as if by magic she no longer mattered.
Now here he was at the end of the road wondering what he had learned, what he had gained. He learned from Mr. Bennet that there was no such thing as mercy and that the things you make will always come back to haunt you. He learned from Angela that lies are sweet poison that drip from the most innocent of flowers. He learned from Claire and Peter that love and compassion is not enough. He learned from Mohinder that even the best of things can turn out to be the worst of things. Now what was there to gain from all of his experiences?
He found with a dull ache that there was nothing, just a series of giving into the hunger. He gained powers from others, but only to sate the hunger, nothing more. In a short span of a few weeks he had gained and lost brothers, a mother, a lover, a father, a purpose, a job, a place, friends, a niece. the ache flared deeply within his chest as he realized he was utterly and completely alone. He smiled bitterly at the thought of having no one here with him.
"Peter, you weren't supposed to kill. I was, it was me all along."
His brows furrowed in newfound determination as he set out to find a way to curb the pain that was threatening to claw itself up his chest and burst forth in an littany of screams and cries of pain.
He had to satisfy the hunger.
