It was a chilly night at the one of the Vocaloid studios, some signs gradually beginning to show that Winter was finally leaving to make room for Spring. The front door to one of the said studio buildings slid open and in stepped Anon and Kanon, twin Vocaloids which were currently residing there because a Producer was interested in utilizing their voices in the coming days. The lights in the lobby were dimmed, given it was late at night and people passing through wasn't much expected. A receptionist sat behind the desk across the room adjacent from the front doors however, tapping away at her computer which helped illuminate the room a bit. She glanced from her work, smiling warmly at the twins as they stepped in through the doors, both of them bundled up appropriately for the weather outside.
"Ah, hello you two." The woman smiled at the two girls. "I hope you two had fun today - and oh, what's that?" She asked, noticing how Kanon carefully carried a small, plain white box in her hands.
"We did." Anon said as they both walked away from the doors.
"Yep," Kanon gave a small giggle. "And this?" She glanced down at the box in her hands. "This is just a little treat." She smiled. "For me and Anon, that's all."
The receptionist nodded, already having a feeling what it was supposed to be. "Well, in that case, I hope you two enjoy it."
"Yeah, we will!" Kanon replied, beginning to depart towards the hall that would take her to their destination, Anon already in tow. Anon gave a wave in farewell.
"See you." The receptionist returned Anon's wave. "And happy birthday, you two!"
"She's always so nice." Anon commented once they were both out of sight, their destination being their room which they were staying in.
"Yeah," Kanon nodded in agreement. "I can tell why that Lapis adores her."
"And why Yuu likes to play pranks on her?" Anon questioned, looking to her side at her sister in an amused fashion.
Kanon quietly scoffed in response. "I dunno... The Zola brothers are just funny like that." She shrugged, not really knowing the answer to her question.
It wasn't long before they arrived at the bedroom they both shared, Kanon quickly producing the keys from her pocket without dropping the box and ruining the delicate contents. Once inside, Anon gently shut the door behind them and the two began to get to work on shedding off their cool weather clothing after Kanon set the box down on the desk.
"Today was fun, wasn't it Anon?" Kanon asked as she removed her orange scarf, tossing it onto the bed with her jacket soon following. She'd clean it up later.
"Yep... It was." Anon replied, finishing taking off her jacket and other cold weather clothing articles. A small pile of clothing law strewn about on the bed as Anon and Kanon now turned their attention to the box sitting on the desk.
"Think you could grab the candles? They should be in the top drawer there." Kanon went over to the lightswitch to dim the lights.
"Mhm." Anon quietly hummed in reply, pulling open the drawer to retrieve the candles in question. She pulled the only two candles out, setting them next to the box. Once the lights were dimmed, Kanon returned to her sister's side. Without saying anything, she began to slide the white top off the box. It slid off with ease, revealing the contents inside after she had set the top aside.
Inside was a small cake, looking to be of chocolate flavor with frosting to match. It was simple looking; no fancy design decoration on it to speak of.
Pulling up another chair next to the one already situated normally at the desk, Anon promptly took a seat on said chair as she gazed curiously at the small cake. "So, how are we gonna do this?"
"I think it goes something like this." Taking the two candles from the desk, she gently pushed the two into the top of the cake with the wick end of them pointing up. "At least, this is what I've seen in the pictures."
"And then we use matches, right?" Anon scooted back in her chair slightly, pulling a small box of matches from the still open drawer before shutting it.
"Yep - and thanks." Kanon thanked her younger half, accepting the matches from her. Managing to light one of them without accident, she proceeded to spread the small flame to the wick of the candles before snuffing out the match.
"One last thing 'till we can eat it." Kanon took her own seat next to Anon's, both of them watching the two lone flames on the candles dance about.
"And that is?"
"We each have to make a wish, then blow out the candles." Kanon replied simply.
"Wait, what?" Anon asked as she glanced at Kanon, brows furrowing in question. "I mean, why do we have to make a wish?"
Kanon gave a shrug of her shoulders. "I dunno, really... I know the humans do it, though. Something about how if you make a wish before blowing out the candles, it'll come true."
"Huh..." Anon fell silent for a few moments, as if trying to make sense of the whole thing. "And they call me the silly one..."
Kanon couldn't help but chuckle, reaching up to give her a playful pat on the head. "That's 'cause you are sometimes, silly!"
Anon gave a pout, shaking her head as to get Kanon's hand off her. "I'm not!"
"You are." Kanon teased, flashing her a happy grin before returning her attention to the cake. "Ah! The candles are melting quick. Let's hurry and make a wish, Anon."
"Umm... Okay," Anon squinted at the flames, trying to think of something to wish for. She hadn't really thought this far ahead. "Can we say what we wish for aloud or what?"
"Ehm..." Kanon rubbed the back of her neck, closing her eyes as if to recall what she had seen of this tradition before. "Crud, I can't remember." She opened her eyes again. "Just do whatever, I guess."
Anon nodded. "Okay then." She looked to her side at her longer haired sister. "I think I have my wish. Are you ready?"
"Oh yeah!" Kanon drew a deep breath, as if prepping herself for what they were about to do. "I had it ready awhile ago." She held her hand up to Anon, smiling warmly at her. Anon returned the smile, gently grasping her hand. They both scooted closer to the desk a bit, both of them ready to enact the human tradition of blowing out candles on your birthday.
"On the count of three?" Kanon asked.
"Sure." Anon's grip on her sister's hand tightened a bit, giving a nod.
Either silently or quietly, the two made their wishes. Anon mumbled her's quietly, while Kanon simply mouthed the words.
"One..."
"Two..."
"Three...!"
The two expelled air from their artificial lungs, succesfully blowing out the candles with a small puff of smoke coming from it.
With the flame snuffed out, the room got a tad bit darker, only the moonlight peeking through the curtains providing just enough light to see.
"Well... That was that." Kanon mumbled, watching as the trails of smoke dissipated into nothing.
Anon nodded, looking at her sister now. "When are we going to get our wishes?"
"Uhh..." Kanon chuckled sheepishly, as if she didn't entirely know how to respond. "Well... I don't know. I don't know if this whole thing even works. It's just some thing humans tend to do to celebrate life, I guess."
Anon frowned. "They celebrate their birth by making wishes that won't come true?"
"I guess? I'm not really an expert on this human tradition stuffs." Kanon shrugged her shoulders. "You know how silly they can be sometimes. To us, anyways."
"So... What did you wish for, then?" Anon asked after a somewhat awkward pause of silence.
"Nuh-uh," Kanon stood up, going to fetch something to cut the cake with. "I heard that you aren't supposed to tell anyone what you wished for after you do it, because if you do it won't come true."
Anon pursed her lips a bit, looking as if she wasn't quite believing her. Before she could speak up about it, Kanon spoke again.
"But we don't have to follow human tradition one hundred percent, no?" She said as she began to cut into the cake with a little knife she fetched. "What did you wish for, Anon?"
Anon leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms in thought. "Well," She began slowly, trying to think on how to word what she was about to say. "I kinda wished to know what it's like to be, well, you know... Human. I-I mean, what it actually feels like first hand. Not being told what it feels like." She watched Kanon to see what her reaction would be.
Kanon said nothing at first, slowly cutting a piece out from the cake and moving it onto a little plastic plate she had on hand. "You're in luck, sis." She gently slid the plate with the cake slice on it. "Because I just so happened to wish for whatever you wished for to come true." She smiled, beginning to cut her own slice next.
Anon stared for a moment, before finally a small smile tugged at her lips. "Thanks Kanon." She giggled, but it quickly died down. "But you didn't need to waste your wish on me."
"I didn't have to, but I wanted to." Kanon replied simply, and after serving herself a slice of the chocolate cake she took her seat again next to her. "Because you're my sister, Anon. I want what's best for you, as sappy as it sounds."
Anon puffed her cheeks out at the response she got. "Okay, I guess."
Kanon gave her a gentle pat on the shoulder, handing her a fork to use to eat. "C'mon sis, let's dig in!" She smiled widely.
Accepting the fork, Anon nodded and scooted a bit closer to the desk. "Sure."
To the both of them, this was perfect. Even if they were eating basically in the dark, and even if the cake didn't have that much of a distinct taste to it due to them lacking a more advanced system of taste, it didn't matter too much to them. They had fun that day, away from the hustle and bustle of the studio.
They had each other.
And that was all that mattered.
A/N: And that's that! I absolutely adore these two, and it just so happens today (March 3rd) was the date they were released, making them officially one year old. I think they did alright for their first year, given there basically wasn't any marketing for them prior to release and the over-saturation of the female Vocaloid market. I really wanna see more attention given to them though, and hopefully they'll get some of it during their second year.
I whipped this up as a quick little thing to celebrate. Happy 1st anniversary, Anon & Kanon.
