Reassurance

Kai:

"What kind of question is that?"

Tala looked at me strangely, like I had grown a second head. I looked at the ground to avoid his eyes. Why did I have to go and ask that stupid question? Because of the dreams.

Dream:

There was fog everywhere. The place was empty, or at least it seemed to be. Suddenly the rest of the Blitzkrieg Boys were walking towards him.

"What? You're still here Kai?" Spencer asked. "I was hoping that Boris killed you off already."

"Ya know," Brian said. "Sometimes I wonder why we let Kai onto our team. He's pretty worthless to us."

"Remember how he lost against Tyson in the World Championships last year?" Ian reminded them. The other two nodded their heads in agreement.

"I tried my hardest," Kai tried uselessly.

He turned to the last person, hoping that the redhead wouldn't dish out the verbal abuse like the rest of his team. Their eyes met for a brief moment, then Kai had to look away from the dead eyes.

"Come on, let's go. He doesn't deserve to be around us anymore."

Ian, Spencer, and Brian followed Tala's orders. Kai could only watch his friends disappear into the mist.

Tala:

I watched Kai think over his answer, wondering if he should repeat the question or not. He looked me in the eye.

"I said, would you care if something happened to me."

I blinked, not prepared for such a question. What made him think of that? As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Kai looked away, as if ashamed that he had to say that. I dropped my hammer and stepped closer to him. And what I did next surprised even me.

Kai:

I knew I shouldn't have asked such a stupid question. I imagine Tala walking away from me in disgust, complaining that he got stuck with such a wimp as a teammate. But suddenly I feel arms wrapping around me. I look up to see Tala enveloping me in a hug.

Tala:

What's going on? One moment I'm holding a hammer and the next I'm giving a hug to Kai. But it's more like a hug that siblings give to each other. A caring gesture meant to comfort small children. Sometimes, that's what Kai is to me; a small child lost in the world. And I'm like his big brother.

"Of course I would care," I tell him, firmly but gently. "We're all a family."

Kai relaxes and leans his head against my chest(A/N: awww :D)

Suddenly, the flash of a camera goes off, and we spring apart. I turn to face the culprit who is standing in the doorway, greedily waiting for the picture to come out of his Polaroid camera.

Ian.

Kai:

Once Tala tells me those reassuring words, I relax. My eyes close and relief floods through my mind, demolishing any traces of doubt that was once lurking there. But the familial moment is ruined when someone takes a picture of us. We push away from each other and glare at the tiny figure in the doorway.

Ian.

Tala:

He is so dead.

Kai:

Just wait 'till I get my hands on that midget.

Ian:

The photo comes out of the Polaroid camera and I wait impatiently for the image to appear, forgetting my current danger. Before any shapes start to take form, the camera and photo are snatched away from me. Scowling, I stare up at the offender, but my frown is soon replaced with a terrified look. Because Kai and Tala are glaring down at me.
