Road Rovers- Mustelidae
Chapter 1- Willamina (The Badger)
The badger who became a hero, the hero became an assassin, the assassin who would defend the world by the gun. Quite a tale to tell my cubs when the time comes, but I didn't start out that way. My story begins in the fields and rolling hills of Northeast Canada. To my eyes and my nose, that is my home. yet fate would change my life forever.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was the late afternoon, I was tending to my home in Richelieu. A peach gotten away from my claws, and went rolling down into the nearby cave which I used to store my food for the winter. The thing with us badgers is that we are not canines. It made me wonder what business this collie had with me.
It struck me as fascinating that a light could go through the solid rock walls. I heard an echoing voice. I had never seen anything like it in my life, "Willamina, you have been chosen," said the voice, it took time and a visit from the collie to make me figure out what he meant by those words. After all, I am just a humble badger living a humble life
As I looked up at the moon, I knew I wasn't just a forest critter, but what was I chosen to do? For years after that day, I wondered what it was that light wanted. That question was answered the one day in the middle of the summer. From dawn to sunset, I went about my day doing what my kind do, tending to my home and finding food.
That afternoon, I was greeted by a visitor. It was a collie. It was quite obvious she didn't appear to be from the area. This was a once every harvest moon opportunity for me to meet a dog that was not trying to force me off their land, "-Um...excuse me, are you Willamina?-" She asked, judging by her accent I could tell she was obviously English.
To any humans passing by, it would appear a dog and a badger are just sniffing at each other when we were talking. I wanted to keep it that way around her, "-Depends on whose asking-," I replied, "-you're a long way from home, Cherie, what business do you have here?-" I asked, I wanted to get straight down to the point of the matter.
I am not very trusting of strangers. I had my guard up. I am the only badger in this town so I get few visitors, "My name is Colleen, I was sent to come and retrieve you, Billie," She said, switching to English. I nodded to her, something in the back of my mind was telling me that she and the light I saw years ago had something in common.
"Come with me," I said leading my guest to the cave where I saw the light. The thing was, I don't remember anything from my past. I don't even know who my parents are as I was too young. Who were my parents? How did I end up in that ditch? Maybe this Collie can help, "Now I know you didn't come here so I can be a tour guide, speak up,"
"The Professor has been searching for you for sometime, my friends and I want you to join the Road Rovers," She explained, I have heard of the Rovers, maybe this could be my chance, "listen, you are a part of this world, you can do your part to defend it," such a thing seemed so large, even for a small town lady like myself, "so what say you?"
"I need answers, understand? I need to know more about my past, and why...I was chosen," I said appearing in my two-legged form, something I rarely showed anyone, "your master must have had some reason behind his decision," Colleen nodded as she transformed to my surprise, "you...you're just like me...but...how?," I said in awe.
"It hasn't stopped me, my own master doesn't know about this side of me either," She replied, "come now...you maybe different, but you're not alone, Billie," Colleen seemed more friendly than I anticipated. I felt ashamed being rude. It seemed something caught her eye as we exited, "oh those apples look yummy...can I have some?" She asked.
"No," I snapped at her. Thus my life took another turn, and for the better. The world is a big place. As I left the farm, I wondered just how big the world is. It is going to be a huge task for me to protect it, but I feel better knowing that I won't be alone. When I met Colleen, I felt I had made my first friend and that my destiny was set in motion.
