"What did you want to show me Sev?"

"Come over here and I'll show you!"

"You'd better not scare me again Severus Snape or I'll-"

"No I'm not going to pretend to be a banshee again, just look."

A nine-year old Lily Evans hesitantly walked over to a young boy dressed in black, standing near a willow tree. Peeking at whatever he held in his hands, she let out a squeal of surprise.

"Oh, how did you get the petals to open and close like that?"

Sev grinned proudly and wordlessly lifted his hand into the air, and the small flower floated from his hand, pin wheeling into the air and landing softly into Lily's outstretched palm. She touched the soft petals delightedly and looked up, a smile on her face.

"And to think only two days ago you couldn't do that," she teased

Sev nodded and shrugged casually "I've been practicing, I wanted to surprise you!" he gave her a hesitant smile, and was delighted when she returned it.

.O.

Sev and Lily lay side by side on the soft grass, resting on a gentle incline on the edge of the woods.

Lily sighed happily; she could hear the gentle splashing of the stream near their feet, and the rustling of the summer breeze through the pine trees surrounding them.

"I love summer..." she sighed contentedly

Sev stared up into the fading light, his hands folded on his stomach and nodded in agreement.

"I wish that summer would last forever." he said, in a rare moment of wistfulness.

Lily closed her eyes and murmured "And if summer lasts forever, will we stay best friends forever?"

Sev was quiet for a moment, and then closed his eyes as well, feeling the warmth of the sun brush against his skin, and fiddled with the blades of grass tickling his arm.

"Sev?" Lily turned her head and looked curiously at him.

"Yes?" he turned his head also, hiding the pain of his broken past behind an emotionless mask, like always.

"We will stay best friends, won't we?" a small flicker of doubt crossed her sea-green eyes, and a light breeze blew through the trees around them, sending a dance of green, yellow leaves up into the never-ending sky.

Sev nodded, and a smile appeared on his pale skin, which only Lily could bring out in his worst times.

"Always."
