It had been only 2 days since Voyager's return to Earth, but Kathryn Janeway was already feeling lonely and the pressure from the media and Starfleet were getting to her. She glanced at the clock on her nightstand. 1:02 AM. She sighed and turned onto her back. She had to get up in four and 1/2 hours. She had to get him off her mind. The darkness and the silence of the room were slowly getting to her. "Sleep be damned," she mumbled as she rolled out of bed. She turned her nightgown in for a pair of black pants and a blue T-shirt before going outside for a walk.
After only five peaceful minutes of walking, a large crash of thunder sounded and rain immediately came pouring down. She hadn't felt real rain in so very long. She paused for just a moment and raised her face to the sky. Feeling the cold-water roll down her skin was revitalizing. The streets of San Francisco were just as she remembered them and yet everything seemed so different. Reaching the park, a destination she hadn't realized she had, she sat down on a wet bench, leaned back and closed her eyes.
She remembered their last night on Voyager. Chakotay came to her quarters for one last meal. Before he left he hugged her tight and whispered, "if you ever need me for anything, anything at all, even if it's just to have someone to yell at; I'll always be there. You got that?" His face broke into a full-fledged dimpled smile. The image was burned into her mind. "I need you now Chakotay," she whispered.
"Well it's a good thing we both had the same idea."
Stunned she opened her eyes and saw him standing directly in front of her, also soaked to the bone, with the same grin on his face. She stood up and hugged him. "It feels like forever Chakotay."
"It's only been two days," he chuckled.
"Two extremely long days of hell and I didn't have my first officer by my side. These debriefings are horrible."
"Well, at least it's almost over."
"Yeah."
"But you know," Chakotay began with a twinkle in his eye and a half smile, "I'm not your first officer anymore and you're not my Captain, Kathryn," He emphasized her first name.
She smiled despite her best efforts not to. She was scared of where this was heading. Chakotay reached out a hand and brushed some wet strands of hair out of her face. She swallowed, and pushing away all of her doubts, worries, and fears, she put her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply. He quickly kissed back with the same passion.
She pulled away after a few seconds. "It's a damn cold night," she stated.
He laughed, "Didn't you ever hear the old expression she doesn't have enough sense to get outta the rain?"
"Shut up," she mumbled and kissed him again. "Chakotay?"
"Yes Kathryn?"
"Take me home."
He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and she leaned into him. "Aye Captain."
Hate it? Love it? Review!
