What is Friendship?

I was taught that friends are just mere stepping stones to get to your next destination. Friendship was said to be a kinder word that describes a bond between two people out of necessity. The friendships that are made were because you or the other had a valued skill. Friends are comrades who share a common mission. When I first met the other Gundam Pilots, we were all aimed at one goal; to bring down OZ.
But now, OZ is no more, now there is peace...now there is no need for comrades...no need for missions anymore...so why am I still with the other Gundam Pilots? Why are they still my "friend" even when my skills are no longer needed? What is the purpose of friendship now?
I remember on one of our reunions, I could see the strong bond of friendship between Trowa and Quatre. They were playing their instruments, blending with each other, harmonizing with each other, feeling each other's emotions through the music. I was sitting on a chair, observing them. Is that what friendship means? To feel each other's feelings?
Now I'm at another reunion, we have it once every two months. At our first reunion, I was hesitant about coming at all. But after two years, gradually, I relaxed and was actually happy around them. I hadn't felt that emotion-or any emotion for that matter- in a long time.
Just like the other reunions in these past years, I was sitting in a chair while Quatre played the violin, Trowa played the flute. Each reunion would be a different piece of music that they made up. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they practice these pieces before coming here.
I glance at Duo and Wufei who are closer by the fire. Their eyes were on their friends, feeling the emotions that Trowa and Quatre are trying express through the music. I felt content seeing them smile. Trowa and Quatre ended this particular piece and we applauded. As they start a new piece, I suddenly stand up and go by the grand piano that lay behind them. Trowa and Quatre stop but I motioned for them to continue. As they continued, I joined in. I was with them at every beat, threading the notes together, making a story out of the music. Even Duo and Wufei were amazed that I knew how to play piano. When Trowa and Quatre stopped, I didn't even notice, but continue playing. Everyone is surprised at how easy it is to read my feelings through the music. Then I noticed that I was the only one playing. I stopped immediately.
"Keep playing Heero," Trowa said smiling, "That was amazing."
"You should think about playing piano for a living," Quatre commented seriously with sincere admiration.
I shrug and ask Trowa and Quatre to play a piece of music with me. At that instant, seeing the sheer amount of joy on everyone's face as we played, finally allowed me to understand the meaning of friendship.
Friendship is a bond that ties two people together who can empathize with each other. Friendship is the thread that allows people to share their joys and sorrows, who can experience each others happiness, who can ease the pain, who will unselfishly lend a hand when in need, who will stand by your side no matter what.
While playing the piano, I smile. This time, it is not a mask, my smile reaches my eyes. For the first time since the war ended, I truly feel happy.
