Prologue
Audra Cox's life had never been the same since her father disappeared. They had been in Canada, taking the trip they had been saving up for for years, when all of a sudden golden light filled the air, with intensity so powerful it had caused Audra to black out. When she had woken up, her father was gone and there was a pack of lean and strong grey wolves surrounding her.
The wolves were originally intending to eat her, but when she fought back, the wolves recognized her as an equal and took her in. She had been living with the wolves for three years, working with them to survive in the wild.
She had turned thirteen years old a week ago, but the pack did not celebrate trivial things like birthdays. She spent the day thinking about her old life, which was something she rarely allowed herself to do. It had just been her and her father in the tiny apartment in Manhattan, and even though they barely had any money to get by, they were happy together. Their dream was to visit the Canadian wilderness, where her dad had met her mom. Her mom had disappeared when Audra was six weeks old, and all she remembered was a strong yet gentle voice telling her stories of Greek heroes and gods. It felt that every time she read about Greek mythology, she could almost feel her mom guiding her to where she needed to go.
Audra was running with the pack today. A layer of thick mist draped over the forest like a veil. As she always did when she was in the forest, she felt one with the trees, the brooks, the mist, and the life in the forest. Abruptly, the pack came to a stop.
Audra had learned how to communicate with the pack a long time ago, and she asked them why they had stopped. In return, the Alpha pointed his tail towards a notice on a bulletin board.
"I didn't realize that we had run out so far. Are there any humans here?"
The Alpha shook his head. Look! He seemed to be saying with his eyes.
Audra looked at the notice more closely. It had a picture of a girl with long blonde hair and vividly stormy grey eyes. The person looked familiar.
"MISSING FOR THREE YEARS!" it declared loudly. "WE HAVE REPORTS THAT INDICATE THAT SHE IS IN THIS FOREST. KEEP A SHARP EYE OUT."
Audra realized it with a shock.
Of course it looked familiar.
It was her.
