Ludwig was tired. No not tired, exhausted and the only thing standing between him and a night by the fire with Feliciana was some last minute Christmas shopping. He normally didn't leave things until the last minute but due to the unexpected arrival of his brother and his girlfriend he had to get gifts for them. Feli had offered to go but he didn't want to risk her falling and hurting their unborn child. A cry brought him out of his mind.

"Mattie are you sure you checked all your pockets?!"

"I'm sure!"

He looked down and saw two boys. They were both patting down their pockets franticly trying to find money in order to pay for a pair of shoes that was on the counter.

The Swiss cashier was tapping his toe with impatience. "Look kids, you're holding up the line. I already told you that you don't have enough."

The heartbroken look in the boys eyes was unbearable to look at. "B-but w-we need the shoes for mommy."

"Yeah! Papa said that there might not be much time."

"She's been sick for a really long time and daddy said she might meet Jesus tonight."

"We want her to look beautiful if she does."

Ludwig thought about his wife back home and how he would feel in the boys father's position. After a brief prayer of thanks for his healthy wife, he put some money on the counter. "That should cover the shoes."

"Thanks, mister!" Both boys said. After the shoes were bagged they ran out.

When the two boys got home their father met them at the door. "Where 'ave you two been? Your mama 'as been worried."

Alfred (the oldest by twenty minutes) spoke up. "We're sorry papa but we wanted to get the shoes mama wanted."

The Frenchman smiled at the simple childish explanation. "Zen we should take zem to 'ere." He takes the boys by the hand and leads them to the only bedroom in their tiny house. It had been turned into a makeshift hospital room. In the room was a bed and on that bed was the love of his life and the mother of his children.

Alice Bonefoy was most definitely on her way to meet Jesus tonight. Her twin brother Arthur Kirkland was sitting by her side saying his last good-byes. Alice's face lit up when she saw her sons. "Hello boys, where have you been? I almost left without saying good bye."

The boys carefully climbed on the bed. "We got you the shoes you said you wanted mamma." Alfred said for the both of them.

Mathew nodded. "I love you mommy."

"And I love all of you. Hey! Why don't you two put those shoes on my feet for me?"

With enthusiastic nods, both boys went to the foot of the bed and slipped the shoes on their mother's feet. The family stayed together the rest of the night.

The next day Ludwig was sitting with his wife and their extended family. Feliciana was reading the paper. When she got to the obituaries she pointed one out. "Ve~ Gilbert didn't you say your friend Francis's wife was sick?" At his nod she handed him the paper. He read it aloud.

'In loving memory of Alice Elisabeth Kirkland-Bonefoy who passed away last night after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by both her parents. She is survived by her twin brother Arthur James Kirkland and her husband Francis Bonefoy and their two sons Alfred and Matthew.'

Underneath was a photo of the family. When Ludwig saw the photo he instantly recognized the boys from the store last night.
