"C'mon Jack," the voice whined.
"Believe it or not, I do have other things to do, Doctor" he replied.
"It's only paperwork."
Jack laughed. "Only paperwork, that's alright for you to say. You do know you cause most of this only paperwork."
"Not my fault the Vatash decided that Cardiff would make an ideal place to set up a gambling racket," the Doctor sniffed.
There was silence for about thirty seconds. "If we don't go now, we'll miss it."
"Doctor, please," Jack said sounding more irritated than he meant to.
"Fine," the Doctor retorted and was gone from his office in a whirl of coat and a waft of whatever that aftershave he used.
A knock at the door followed about a minute afterwards.
"No, Doctor," he said.
The door opened, it wasn't the Doctor, it was Gwen.
She stood with her arms folded. "You should go, it seems really important to him."
"Gwen..."
She sighed and grabbed the file out of Jack's hand. "Just go...now, before he goes off. With his life, it may be the last time you see him."
Jack sighed. "Fine, but when I get back...paperwork.
He stepped into the TARDIS and found the Doctor fiddling with something on the console.
He looked up. "Paperwork finished, is it?"
Jack winced at the sarcasm in the Doctor's voice. "It can wait, where are we going?"
The Doctor gave him that grin that lit up the whole room. "You'll see," and the sound of the TARDIS dematerialising filled the air.
"Wow, that is beautiful," Jack said as the almost translucent creature floated over him. "What are they?"
"They're called Silsafrax, they usually live on the fringes of know space. But once every generation they migrate to here, to mate and give birth."
"So why didn't you take me to see it before?"
The Doctor looked up at the sky and Jack could see the wonder in his face.
Then he looked down and Jack saw an immense sadness in his eyes.
"The Silsafrax generation is over a thousand years Jack. I'm nine hundred and three. For me this is a once in a lifetime experience. No-one will ever see this again...once I'm gone, it will be like they don't exist."
"There's always me," Jack said.
"No, Jack...this part of space will never be seen by humans. I didn't want to experience this alone. I wanted someone to remember, someone who would remember me."
Jack moved closer to the Doctor and took him into an embrace.
"No-one will ever forget you."
