Talk like a Newsie in three easy steps

1. When found at the beginning or middle of a word, vowel-r combinations should be pronounced 'oi'.

2. Use bad grammar, especially 'ain't' and double negatives.

3. Insert appropriate slang, i. e. scab, soak 'em.

Notes:

a. A tougher-than-thou attitude helps all the way.

b. Baring extended trips to New Yoik, err, York, watching Newsies over and over again is the best way to improve your accent. I hang around my very cool cousin from Albany, but not everyone is blessed with an Ed. You'll know you've got it right when your family starts to give you funny looks and ask you where your grammar has gone and when you're moving back to Brooklyn.

c. Newsie gear is great for getting you in the mood. I. e. cap, vest, suspenders, button-up boots. I went as Racetrack last Halloween (complete with cigar, unlit) and I still wear my outfit to school (sans cigar). Thrift stores and garage sales are great places to find Newsie-esque clothes.
