Hermione and Harry were looking out into the lake doing their homework. It was a cool spring morning, and Harry was enjoying the change in weather. The lake was glistening in the sun, and every now and then Harry could see a disturbance in the water. Harry was trying to concentrate on his homework for Snape. He knew he wouldn't get a good grade on it, and his thoughts kept on roaming to a certain red-headed girl.
Harry closed his books in defeat with a sigh. Ginny is Ron's sister; he can't betray his best mate. Why does his best mate's sister have to be so beautiful? If he could just kiss her once, and Ron can see how happy she made him. Then Ron would allow them together and Harry would be happy. If only, of course there is still Dean Thomas that he has to deal with, and Ginny has men lining up at her feet. Harry wondered if he even had a chance.
"You know, Harry, you should just finish Snape's homework right now. You have the time now," Hermione said.
"I don't feel like it," Harry responded.
"Oh really, or are your thoughts consumed with thinking about Ginny?" Hermione stated. Harry gaped at her. How did she know? Harry has never told anyone about his crush on Ginny in fear of what Ron would think. "Please, Harry. It is so obvious that you fancy her. Anyone can tell by the way you look at her. You know, she has been fighting with Dean an awful lot lately."
Harry glanced down to his feet, blushing mad. He had noticed that Ginny and Dean were fighting. He secretly wished that Dean would fight with her to the point of breakup. "Yeah, I have noticed," Harry mumbled.
"Then why don't you tell her how you feel?"
"Easier said than done," Harry grumbled. He felt uncomfortable talking about why he couldn't tell Ginny his feelings.
"Come on, Harry, tell me why," Hermione begged. Her big brown eyes widened in curiosity and her mouth was formed into a successful smirk.
"It's just," Harry started, not knowing where to begin. "Ron…he is my best mate, and Ginny is his sister. He was so mad when he saw Ginny and Dean snogging in the hall. What would happen if he saw me and Ginny snogging in the hall? Would it make a difference? I am worried he will get mad or angry. But then there is the chance that he will be perfectly okay with everything. I just want him to see how happy she would make me. I want him to be happy for me. And, I don't know if he would give us that." A silence formed between Harry and Hermione. Harry looked down at his hands, not daring to look at Hermione. He was scared she would laugh and call him ridiculous. He had already spilled too much.
"Bloody hell," a voice behind Harry stated. "You know, mate, you could've told me this."
Harry turned around to see Ron Weasley messing with his hands nervously. A blush crept on Harry's cheeks. He could not believe that Ron just heard everything he said. He meant to tell Ron at a later time, not right now in front of Hermione. Humiliation settled in Harry's stomach.
"Look, Ron—"
"I understand. I…You…Listen, I may not be completely comfortable with my best mate fancying my sister, but I will have to deal. If she makes you happy, then I am fine with you two being together," Ron said.
"Thanks, Ron, it means a lot to me," Harry responded, smiling up at Ron. A sudden look of disgust masked Ron's face and Harry started to get nervous that he changed his mind. "Ron…"
"A thought, and a nasty one at it, just occurred to me. Harry, you are not aloud to snog my sister. That's just gross, mate."
"Says the boy who has been snogging Lavender Brown," Hermione snapped. Harry, Ron, and Hermione looked at each other and started cracking up laughing. The trio stayed by the lake cracking jokes and laughing all evening. By the time Harry got to Gryffindor's common, his chest felt considerably lighter and his hopes felt higher.
